         <description><![CDATA[<div>John Jacob Astor was born July 17, 1763, Waldorf, Ger. and died March 29, 1848, New York, N.Y., U.S. He gain his fortune from shrewd dealings with Indian tribes he amassed 250,000 dollars and become the leading figure in the fur trade. His company, American fur company was considered the first ever monopoly. His son later expanded on his success. Charles grew up in a poor family which forces him to quit school at an early age to help support his family. He and his family lived in Indiana until he and his brothers Clark and Henry migrated overland to California when gold was discovery there. He soon got his big break when he got in possession of railroad company. He was and american industrialist and founder of the Standard oil company. Johns company dominated the oil business and at one point the only seller of oil. He was best known to caused some industrialized states to enact anti monopoly laws. Leland Stanford was one of the first to build part of the transcontinental railroad. Stanford also practiced law Port Washington in Wisconsin before moving to California where he spent the remainder of his life. He achieved much success in retailing mining supplies and other general merchandise.
