I am going to focus on technology this year for makerspaces. Last year I started collected all the old "technology" I could get my hands on. I plan to display an item one month and just have them write what they think it is. At the end of the month, I will reveal what the item is and display some of their explanations. Then, they can do a T chart comparing the old technology with the new technology. The first month I am going to use an old Kodak box camera from 1934.

I am going to start with at least one makerspace per month this year. With STEAM being my focus I will use the idea of drawing what's seen on the microscope as my first station. I will also incorporate a station using Legos one month, and a station using the game of chess another month. I would like to have one station where students would use a simple CAD program to design their name in 3D. If we are fortunate enough to have access to a 3D printer, we would print some of the students finished products.

I started last year with 5 stations: Art (drama, music, puppets), Science, Math, Technology, and Engineering. This, year, with a re-configured library, I have a more substantial Maker Space Place. I change them out monthly and my goal as of today is to have an Ipad on each table to explain the directions. I'll also check the curriculum guide, because I think linking to curriculum will help spark ideas for activities.

One of my most popular last year was paper rockets - and it was simple too!
Collect • Letter-size paper • Pencil • Scissors • Scotch tape • Drinking straw Create the rocket body 1. Fold the paper crosswise or hamburger style. Cut along the crease with scissors to make two smaller pieces of paper. 2. Fold one of these pieces in half again, lengthwise or hotdog style, and cut along the crease. 3. Tightly wrap one of these pieces lengthwise around the pencil and tape it so that it forms a tube shape. 4. Twist, bend, or fold one end of the tube to form the rocket’s nose and tape it into place. 5. Push the tube off the pencil. Design the fins 6. On one of the remaining pieces of paper, design the size and shape of your rocket’s fins. Think about what shape would help the rocket become more aerodynamic. 7. Carefully cut out the fins and attach them to the rocket body with tape. Launch the rocket! 8. Put an unwrapped drinking straw inside the rocket and blow to launch. 9. Experiment with the angle of the straw and the shape and size of the fins to change the way your rocket flies. How it works When you blow through the straw, the force of your breath causes your rocket to fly through the air just like real rockets fly through the Earth’s atmosphere. The shape of your rocket affects the amount of drag it produces. Fins can help your rocket combat against drag and allow your rocket to fly straighter and stay in the air longer.

As a rookie, my aim is to be on the cutting edge--the place where literature meets technology and ideas become creations. With the current push for Future Ready Librarians and our new responsibility of developing responsible digital citizens, I feel I have landed at the information convergence; Hence--the Learning Hub or Learning Commons. A place where not just STEM or STEAM is emphasized, but a place where all are brought together. A place for both convergent and divergent thinking and tinkering. I am charged with coming up with a concept for our Media Center and turning it into reality. I am not limited in my thinking. That is how our students should feel when they are in our library spaces. We are the Google of the school. An open source area where many become one and the goal is innovation. In order to create this new place, I have begun to brainstorm much like we, in the middle, are doing today. Some ideas I look to continue from Mrs. Alvarez are the implementation of the Makey Makey, Lego & K'Nex, Ozobots, and general tinkering spaces. I also plan to provide students with spaces to learn through LittleBits, Code.org, Raspberry Pi, MakerBot (3D Printer) and Adobe Creative Cloud / Photoshop learning areas.
Jill Kaminski North Naples Middle School I have this piece of furniture in the media center that I want to re-purpose. It needs to become a maker space. I am going to create a station where students can walk up and write/create/draw a book recommendation. Last year I found a hand-drawn picture and hand-written recommendation inside a book that a student had returned. It was the cutest thing I ever saw . I taped it to the shelf where that book was on the shelf and it spurted a lot of checkout of that series. I saw kids stopping to read that funky, little paper. I think I will have some interesting and cool recommendations to use for advertising. Students will love seeing their work all around the media center. I might use 4 x 6 blank index cards. I'm still kicking this idea around. I may do something else, but it will involve the old atlas stand.

At Lorenzo, we have the shared space with the college. There is already a plan in place to implement a MakerSpace (called something else) that will have both open ended projects like I did at MMS but also more focused technology that will play off of the college programs. We will use Ozobots, Makey Makeys, Raspberry Pis, etc but will also try to get input from the college side on what technologies they use in their programs that we can play off of. This will extend those students' learning and give them more opportunities to "play" with their program technology. Some of the most successful ones at MMS were the low-tech ones like crafts and taking apart technology so I recommend some low-tech things from time to time (but they are messy!).

I'm intrigued by Blackout Poetry. This is something that I can do with our 10th grade students. I can set up a station were students can come in to create their own which we can later display.
