The session begin with a brief introduction of Ms. Madhavi by her self.

Initially she started with a small activity where we had to share our understanding of the term "ASSESSMENT" in context with what it sounds like? What it looks like? and what it feels like?

Then she briefed us upon the Characteristics of Effective Assessment:

1) It should be Authentic(giving possibilities to connect with the real world)

2) It should be clear and specific(specifying desired learning goals and success criteria and expectations from learners)

3) It should be varied (using various tools and strategies for enhancing learning)

4) It should be Developmental(individual learners development should be focused)

5) Collaborative Feedback and Feed forward(to know the drawbacks of current learning and support the future learning).

She also mentioned about the process of Monitoring(which can be done through observatios, group assessment, individual assessment. Documenting(maintaining files, portfolios and report cards),Measuring(using various measuring tools), and Reporting(through one to one meet, conferences and report cards, PTM).

Further she elaborated on Feedback & Feedforward by stating it's importance:1) one should take time to discuss the next step of learning, 2) Engage 1 lesson to give feedback and discuss the expectations from learners that we look for.

3) Sharing practice if something works in one class and not in the other.

She continued saying that Pre- Assessment is very important to check the prior knowledge in every unit to know the level of the learner. Only check list is enough for Pre assessment and no need for anecdotes. FA & SA should have checklist along with anecdotes.

Turn learning engagements into assessment like (quiz, oral check, reflections, venn diagram, simple rubrics with YES & NO and even exit slips can be taken as one form assessment.

Communicating learning requirements to the parents is very important to ensure 100% attendance.

She stressed in the point that all educators are responsible for learning process and produced integrated assessments.

Focus on writing skills

In case of any oral assessment we need to maintain assessment sheet which should specify the Task, criteria and checklist. For every assessment there should be a document. For EYP she said one can do oral assessment and comment can be written by educators on what the child has reflected in her own.

To describe the FA & SA in simple terms she showed us wonderful statement which said: When the cook tastes the soup it's FA and When the customer tastes the soup it's the SA.

She also gave a clear picture of assessment strategies and the assessment tools to be used.

In the end she even stressed on something called as GRASP for SAs. According to this SAs should be designed before planning the unit based on time( how many weeks available). SAs lead to actions so we need to choose which action is suitable for the unit and only than plan the SA.

Create descriptors to ease the parents and avoid any confusion among them regarding their child's progress.

In the end she showed us some examples of activities and asked us to share whether the same is a pre assessment, FA or SA.

At last she had a conversation with some educators.

Overall the session was very informative and explained in simple terms. I thank Ms. Madhavi Dutta for enlightening us on every detail of Assessments.

By Ms. Sneha Chougule

IB PYP Educator

Ms. Madhavi Said each activity is wht we do in class is a formative assement. FA is a continuous process that can be run on a day-to-day or even a lesson-by-lesson basis while summative assessments tend to take place at the end of chapters, semesters, or years. Both work to inform educators how students are progressing and work in tandem to paint a picture of classroom performance. Yesterday's session she also mentioned that Exit Tickets or "Tickets to leave" are a formative assessment tool offering an effective way to end a class. Teachers may use exit tickets to assess students' understanding of the topics they are teaching in class. She also spoke about how different types of assessment should be use in the classroom. She also said how to use the assessment tools to support students learning. She also said peer and self assessment , where students assess each other and themselves, can encourage students to take greater responsibility for their learning, for example, by encouraging engagement with assessment criteria and reflection of their own performance and that of their peers. Through this, students can learn from their previous mistakes, identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Ms. Sukanti

Assessment goals and criteria must be discussed with the learners.GRASP method enables us to assess the child correctlyNarrow down the tools of assessments both formative and summative.Eg quiz can be a form of assessments Writing reflection on guest speaker session is not .Educators to understand the purpose of assessmentsAssessment should not only be conducted by the main subject educators but ADDMS team are also required to conduct assessment which can be done collaboratively Juliet

It can be also done by giving and receiving feedback. Peer checking can also help. It is very important for a learner to understand the concept before doing the self assessment test. Ma'am also told that it is very important to pre- assessment to check the prior knowledge of the learners. It was an informative and wonderful session where ma'am explained everything in detail.

Pritika Kudnekar
