"That study showed that people derived less enjoyment from face-to-face interactions if they had been using their phones.

"Just having phones out and available makes people feel more distracted," says Dunn, who will be presenting the research at the convention. "So, by tucking phones away during social interactions, we can increase our odds of really connecting with the people around us." (VerticalNews Health)
Phones are just altogether distractions, from there notification sounds to lighting up by themselves. Distractions don't allow you to focus on the things or people around you to your best ability. That can cause people to get annoyed easily.

"I saw four people having dinner out the other night. Three were fiddling with thingies in their laps while the fourth looked lost. It would have been funny if it wasn't so sad." (RTP)
People on their phones leave those around them out if they're not on their phones. They're not included in those conversations on the phone and there aren't conversations being initiated off of the phone, at least not ones that anyone is listening to. And once one gets on their phone its hard to get off. Its addicting. There's always another picture to like, text to read, or level to beat.

"'Will you turn the parlor off?' he asked. 'That's my family.'" (Bradbury 46)

Mildred calls these people on programs that are projected onto her walls her family. She talks and listens to them when she could be talking to her husband, a real life person. Because of these walls and technology the husband and wife don't know each other as well as they could. Although if you asked Mildred she could tell you everything there is to know about her "family" on the walls.

"It all depends on what you mean by social, doesn't it? Social to me means talking about things like this...Or talking about how strange the world is. Being with people is nice. But I don't think it's social to get a bunch of people together and then not let them talk, do you?" (Bradbury 26 and 27)
This is where Clarisse started to voice her opinion innocently. Montag's opinion started to change. He found her differences intriguing. He realized that you might be physically close to someone but if you don't take time away from all the technology and socialize with them you aren't actually close to them at all. His world had brainwashed him to think other wise. This is what our world is trying to do to us as well.

Many agree that technology is great because it connects people from anywhere in the world. This is definitely true and it does an amazing job of it. Although, it's more important to connect to those right in front of our faces because they're the only ones who are going to be there once we finish messaging those from far away and get off our devices.
