Plenty of Space

I found this picture to show the amount of space that is needed in a toddler environment to give them room to improve their gross motor activity (Gonzalez-Mena and Eyer, 2018). There should be plenty of space throughout the classroom with obstacles that could harm children out of the way.

A toddlers environment should have a separate, quiet space for reading, as well as books on full display for the children to see. This allows children to be able to be in a calming environment when it comes time for them to read. This picture shows spots where children can sit quietly and it has the books on display.

Space for Children to Eat

There should be adequate and appropriate space for children when it comes time for their lunch and snacks. The children should have space for themselves to move around, and they should have a chair and tables so they can sit while they eat. This picture showed the spacing of the seats and cleanliness of the tables for children to eat. I feel like those are important for most toddler environments to have eating spaces like the picture below.

Children should have a space to play. All of their toys should be in reach and they should have different kinds of toys to play with. All toys should be able to be mixed with each other to allow for free play (Gonzalez-Mena and Eyer, 2018). Although blocks aren't in the picture below those are also always a must have in a toddler environment. I feel like the picture showed many of the other kinds of toys that could be used to combine together for children to play with.

There should always be a personal spot where children can keep their belongings. This is important because it helps children feel safe in their environment. Cubbies like in the picture below are one of the best ways to allow for these personal spots.

There should be obstacle course objects in the toddlers environment that allows for them to climb, slid, roll, or jump. These are all good to help with gross motor activity as well as plenty of space in the classroom (Gonzalez-Mena and Eyer, 2018). The picture here is of one kind of gross motor activity environment, it shows the stairs and slide that children can use in the room.

In a classroom there should be soft spaces for children to play and relax on as well as hard surfaces. Soft surfaces allow children to bounce roll and flop down. While hard surfaces can make clean up easier for certain messy opportunities in the classroom (Gonzalez-Mena and Eyer, 2018). In the picture I included you can see soft spots on a hard floor while allowing there to be hard floor still showing.

An overcrowded and over stimulated environment is something that a caregiver should make sure doesn't happen. "Toddlers who have too many choices are more apt to make themselves and everyone else unhappy than those who have just enough to do" (Gonzalez-Mena and Eyer, 2018, 81). I came across this picture and felt that it was important to show a what not to have in a Toddler environment.

The picture below showed both mirrors and bars together. These are important because they can allow a child to start gaining a sense of self by looking in the mirror, as well as a way to help them up when they are learning to walk. The picture also shows soft and hard spaces and books on display.

The colors that a toddler environment should have should be natural and soothing. There should also be natural light coming in from somewhere in the classroom. This can be calming for children. I included the picture below because it shows the natural light in the background as well as the calming and natural colors made from the furniture and walls.
