ACQUISITIONS OF HIKMAH FROM IBADAH

The concept of “hikmah” (wisdom) in Islam is often understood as the ability to understand and apply knowledge in a balanced, thoughtful, and appropriate manner. When linked to “ibadah” (worship or acts of devotion), hikmah can refer to the deeper, reflective benefits and wisdom one acquires from sincere worship.

Here are some key acquisitions of hikmah from ibadah:

Understanding the Purpose of Life

Through regular acts of worship, such as prayer (Salah), fasting (Sawm), and charity (Zakat), a person gains a clearer understanding of their purpose in life. These acts of worship help the individual realize that their existence is for the worship of Allah and that their worldly duties are a means to attain the Hereafter. This understanding guides one’s actions and decisions in life.

Spiritual Clarity and Insight

Worship purifies the heart and mind. With the constant remembrance of Allah through prayers, dhikr (remembrance), and reading of the Qur’an, a person acquires spiritual insight. This makes it easier to discern right from wrong, guiding them in making decisions that align with Islamic teachings. It also provides a sense of peace of mind, leading to more balanced and wise living.

Self-Discipline and Control

Many forms of ibadah, like fasting during Ramadan or engaging in night prayers (Tahajjud), require self-discipline and the ability to control one’s desires. This discipline helps an individual in controlling their ego and overcoming impulsive behaviors, allowing them to make wiser choices in life.

Gratitude and Humility

Through worship, one becomes more conscious of the numerous blessings and favors granted by Allah. This sense of gratitude helps develop a deeper sense of humility, as a person realizes their dependence on Allah for everything. Such humility helps foster wise decision-making in both personal and professional matters, as they are not driven by arrogance or pride.

Patience (Sabr) and Endurance

Worship also strengthens sabr (patience), particularly during the trials of life. Regular ibadah helps cultivate resilience and perseverance, allowing an individual to approach difficulties with a calm, measured response, rather than reacting impulsively or out of frustration. This patience is a key aspect of wisdom.

Seeking Forgiveness and Repentance

Acts of worship like Tawbah (repentance) teach a person to acknowledge their mistakes and seek Allah’s forgiveness. Through this, one learns the importance of humility and accountability, which is critical in gaining wisdom. A person who regularly repents and asks for forgiveness is more likely to avoid repeating errors and act with greater wisdom in the future.

Compassion and Empathy

Acts of charity, such as giving Zakat or performing acts of kindness (Sadaqah), foster a sense of empathy and compassion towards others. This strengthens interpersonal relationships and helps the individual approach life’s challenges with a broader perspective, recognizing the struggles of others and responding with kindness and wisdom.

Balance in Life

Ibadah also teaches the importance of balance in life. Through structured acts of worship, a person learns to balance their spiritual, personal, and worldly responsibilities. Wisdom is achieved when a person can manage time effectively, fulfill obligations to family, society, and work, while also maintaining a deep connection with Allah.

A Connection with the Divine

The more an individual engages in worship, the closer they come to Allah. This proximity nurtures an intuitive wisdom—a deep understanding of what is best for them in both this world and the Hereafter. This connection with the Divine helps a person make choices that are aligned with divine guidance.

Reflecting on Life’s Transience

Worship reminds a person of the shortness of life and the reality of the Hereafter. This reflection can lead to wise decision-making, as one becomes more inclined to prioritize lasting values—such as faith, virtue, and sincerity—over fleeting worldly pursuits.

REASON AND SOURCES OF HIKMAH FROM IBADAH

The reason and sources of hikmah (wisdom) derived from ibadah (worship) are deeply intertwined with the concepts of faith, obedience, and the spiritual purification that Islam encourages. Worship is not just a set of rituals but a way to seek closeness to Allah, build a deeper understanding of life, and cultivate moral and spiritual qualities that lead to wisdom. Here, we will explore the reasons why worship leads to hikmah and the sources from which this wisdom flows.

The Reason for Hikmah from Ibadah: Spiritual Growth and Submission

The fundamental reason that ibadah (worship) leads to hikmah is that it serves as a means of spiritual growth. Worship is not simply about performing rituals; it is a process of submitting to Allah’s will and following His guidance. This submission nurtures a closer connection with the Creator, which naturally leads to a deeper understanding of the world, oneself, and others.

Key Reasons:

Submission to Allah’s Will: Through acts of worship, the believer surrenders their desires and judgments to Allah, which cultivates humility and an awareness that one does not possess all knowledge or control over their life. This humbling realization enhances wisdom.

Purification of the Soul (Tazkiyah): Worship purifies the heart and mind. Acts like prayer, fasting, and charity cleanse the soul from arrogance, greed, and other negative traits, fostering the development of virtuous qualities like patience, gratitude, and empathy.

Constant Remembrance: Worship, especially through dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and Salah (prayers), helps keep a person mindful of the purpose of their life. The awareness of the divine presence at all times leads to wise, measured actions.

Training the Soul in Discipline and Control: Many forms of worship, such as fasting, call for self-restraint. This self-discipline enhances one’s ability to control impulses and make wise decisions in challenging situations.

Sources of Hikmah from Ibadah

The wisdom (hikmah) that comes from ibadah is rooted in divine teachings and spiritual practices. Several sources contribute to the development of hikmah through worship:

The Qur’an: The Ultimate Source of Wisdom

The Qur’an is the primary and most direct source of wisdom for a Muslim. The verses of the Qur’an are filled with divine knowledge, moral guidance, and wisdom, and these teachings inform a believer’s understanding of their relationship with Allah and others. Worshiping with reflection on the Qur’an enhances this wisdom.

Revelation and Guidance: The Qur’an is described as a source of guidance and light, offering wisdom that helps a person navigate both material and spiritual life. It teaches a person to reflect deeply on their actions, thoughts, and intentions, leading to wisdom.

Examples from Prophets and Stories: The Qur’an contains numerous stories of the Prophets and past nations, teaching valuable lessons about patience, reliance on Allah, justice, and wisdom in decision-making.

Example verses related to hikmah:

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269): “He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been granted wisdom has certainly been given much good.”

Surah Al-Isra (17:9): “Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most suitable.”

The Sunnah: The Example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

The Sunnah, or the actions, sayings, and approval of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is another vital source of wisdom. The Prophet’s life is a model of how to live according to divine wisdom in all aspects, including how to worship, deal with others, and make decisions.

Practical Application of Wisdom: The Prophet’s behavior and responses in various situations show how worship leads to practical wisdom in daily life. His balanced approach to family, community, and personal life teaches Muslims how to handle challenges with wisdom.

Teachings on Patience and Gratitude: Through the Prophet’s words, believers learn about the virtues of patience (sabr), gratitude (shukr), and forbearance in the face of difficulty, all of which are forms of wisdom.

Example Hadiths related to hikmah:

“Whoever Allah wants good for, He gives him understanding of the religion.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

“Wisdom is the lost property of the believer; wherever he finds it, he is most deserving of it.” (Tirmidhi)

The Heart (Qalb): The Source of Insight

The heart plays a pivotal role in obtaining wisdom. Worshiping with a sincere heart allows the individual to experience the deeper meanings of life and the divine message. A purified heart is the true vessel of hikmah.

Reflection and Introspection (Tafakkur): The act of contemplating Allah’s signs in the Qur’an, nature, and creation leads to insight and understanding. The purification of the heart through worship encourages the believer to see beyond superficial aspects of life and to act with deeper wisdom.

Awareness of the Afterlife: True hikmah involves living in the awareness that this world is transient and that the Hereafter is eternal. Acts of worship reinforce this worldview and lead to wise decisions that prioritize long-term benefit over short-term gains.

Tawhid (Oneness of Allah): Foundation for All Wisdom

Belief in the Oneness of Allah (Tawhid) forms the foundation of all Islamic wisdom. The essence of worship is to recognize that Allah is the ultimate source of all wisdom, knowledge, and truth. This foundational belief impacts all aspects of a Muslim’s worldview and decision-making.

Tawhid reinforces reliance on Allah in all situations, removing reliance on personal desires or the fleeting opinions of others. This reliance fosters spiritual clarity and wisdom in making decisions.

Worship as an Act of Tawhid: Every act of worship, from Salah to charity, is an expression of Tawhid. Through this consistent worship, one gains clarity of purpose and wisdom in managing life’s challenges.

The Role of Knowledge (Ilm)

Islamic knowledge (Ilm) is a direct source of wisdom. Seeking knowledge and applying it in worship helps one acquire hikmah. Knowledge of the Qur’an, Sunnah, Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and the lives of the Prophets leads to a better understanding of how to live wisely according to Allah’s will.

Seeking Knowledge through Worship: Worship, when coupled with seeking knowledge (Ilm), refines the individual’s understanding of life, morality, and ethics. This union of knowledge and worship is the essence of acquiring true wisdom.

The Hadith on Knowledge: “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” (Ibn Majah)

PREPARATION FOR SALAH WITH KHUSHÚ

Preparation for Salah (prayer) with Khushu’ (humility and concentration) is an essential practice for achieving spiritual connection and sincerity in one’s worship. Khushu’ refers to the inner state of humility, focus, and reverence during prayer, and it’s a goal for every Muslim to strive for in order to enhance the quality of their Salah. Achieving Khushu’ during Salah transforms it from a mere ritual into a deeply spiritual experience, aligning the heart and mind with the divine presence of Allah.

Here’s a step-by-step guide for preparing for Salah with Khushu’:

Purity of Body and Soul (Wudu)

•	Wudu (Ablution) is the first and crucial step to prepare physically and spiritually for prayer. It purifies both the body and soul and sets the tone for the act of worship.

•	Make sure your wudu is done with calmness and focus, avoiding distractions. When performing wudu, remember it is not just a physical cleansing, but also a spiritual preparation to stand before Allah.

•	Reflect on the act of wudu: Think of it as a purification of your sins, as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “When a servant performs wudu, and he washes his face, every sin that he has committed with his eyes is washed away…” (Muslim)

Dress in Clean, Modest Clothing

•	Wear clean and modest clothing that is comfortable and allows you to focus on your prayer without discomfort or distraction.

•	The clothing should be free from any impurities (najasa), and it is best to wear something that enhances your sense of reverence.

Choose a Clean and Quiet Place

•	Find a clean and quiet space for your prayer where you can be free from distractions. The location should be peaceful and dedicated to worship, as it helps you maintain focus and concentration during Salah.

•	Ideally, make a prayer space that is free from distractions like phones, television, or noise.

Make an Intention (Niyyah)

•	Before you begin your Salah, make a clear intention (niyyah) in your heart for the prayer. This intention should not be just a mental note, but a deep feeling of committing the act of worship solely for the sake of Allah.

•	The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Actions are judged by intentions, and everyone will get what was intended.” (Bukhari)

•	Silently remind yourself of the significance of this prayer: you are about to stand before the Creator of the universe, the Most Merciful, and the Most Powerful.

Engage in Mental Preparation

•	Clear your mind of any worldly thoughts or concerns before you begin Salah. It’s natural for distractions to arise, but try to consciously set them aside. You can do this through deep breathing or briefly reflecting on the greatness of Allah before starting.

•	Mental focus is key. Begin by saying to yourself, “I am about to stand in front of Allah.” Think of the immense honor and humility in this moment.

•	Take a moment to remember Allah before starting. Engaging in some dhikr (remembrance of Allah) can help calm the heart and bring a sense of closeness to the Creator.

6. Start with Takbir al-Ihram (Opening Takbir)

•	When you say “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest) at the beginning of Salah, feel the weight of the words. Imagine standing in front of the Lord of the Worlds. This is a moment to completely detach from worldly affairs and enter into a spiritual state.

•	This is not just a verbal declaration, but a heartfelt affirmation of Allah’s supremacy and majesty.

Maintain Physical Composure

•	Ensure your posture is calm and humble throughout Salah. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Pray as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, know that He sees you.” (Sahih Muslim)

•	Stand with humility, bow (ruku’) with submission, and prostrate (sujood) with devotion. Avoid restlessness or any actions that might indicate a lack of focus, as such movements can detract from your concentration.

Reflect on the Meaning of What You Are Saying

•	Understand the meanings of the words you are saying during Salah, such as Surah Al-Fatihah, the Takbir, and the tasbih (praises). Understanding the meanings brings a new depth to your prayer and increases the feeling of humility and awe.

•	For example, when saying “Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alamin” (All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds), reflect on the fact that Allah is the Creator, Sustainer, and Owner of everything in the universe.

Avoid Distractions During Salah

•	Minimise distractions during the prayer. Focus on the physical motions of the prayer and on what you are reciting, while avoiding unnecessary thoughts.

•	If your mind starts wandering, bring it back by remembering Allah and thinking about the significance of the words you are saying.

•	The Prophet (PBUH) said, “A person may have only a portion of his prayer written for him, depending on his concentration.” (Ahmad)

Increase Your Awareness of Allah’s Presence

• Engage your heart in the worship by remembering the majesty and proximity of Allah. The more you remember that Allah is watching and listening to you in every movement, the greater your concentration will be.

• When in Sujood (prostration), feel the closeness to Allah and the ultimate act of submission. This is a time of humility, where you are physically and spiritually closest to Allah. Reflect deeply on the fact that Allah’s mercy is more expansive than any human understanding.

Seek Forgiveness and Humility Before Prayer

• Make a du’a (supplication) for humility and concentration before beginning your prayer. Ask Allah to help you attain khushu’ and to keep your heart focused during Salah.

• The Prophet (PBUH) advised to seek refuge from distractions and asked Allah for a sincere and humble heart. You can say a simple du’a like, “O Allah, guide my heart and keep me focused on Your worship.”

After Salah – Reflect and Make Du’a

•	After completing your prayer, take a moment to reflect on the quality of your worship. If you experienced true khushu’, be grateful to Allah for granting you the ability to be present in your prayer.

•	Make du’a (supplication) for continued focus and humility in future prayers. Reflect on how you can improve your concentration and spiritual connection in the next Salah.

THE VIRTUES OF SALAH

Salah (prayer) holds a central place in the life of a Muslim. It is not only a physical act of worship, but also a means of spiritual purification and a direct connection with Allah. There are numerous virtues of Salah that underscore its importance in the life of a believer. These virtues touch on both the worldly and spiritual benefits of prayer, helping Muslims grow closer to their Creator, purify their hearts, and gain Allah’s blessings.

1. A Pillar of Islam

Salah is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making it a fundamental act of worship for every Muslim. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Islam is built upon five pillars: the declaration of faith, the establishment of prayer, the giving of zakat, fasting during Ramadan, and the pilgrimage to Mecca.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

As one of the foundational aspects of Islam, Salah is essential to the faith. Neglecting it is akin to neglecting the structure of Islam itself.

2. The Connection Between the Servant and Allah

Salah creates a direct connection with Allah. It is a moment when a believer stands in the presence of their Creator, reciting the words of the Qur’an and praising Allah.

Allah’s response to the prayer is expressed in the Hadith Qudsi: “I have divided the prayer between Me and My servant into two halves: half for Me and half for My servant. And for My servant is what he asks.” (Sahih Muslim)

Through Salah, the worshipper strengthens their spiritual bond with Allah and receives guidance and peace from Him.

3. Purification of the Soul

Salah purifies the heart and soul. It is not only a physical act but also a spiritual purification, removing the spiritual filth that accumulates through sin and distraction.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) likened Salah to a river in which a person bathes five times a day, saying: “If there was a river at the door of one of you, in which he bathed five times a day, would any of his dirt remain? They said: ‘No dirt would remain.’ He said: ‘That is like the five prayers, by which Allah erases sins.’” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Each Salah serves as an opportunity to cleanse oneself from the daily mistakes and sins, enabling the believer to start anew with every prayer.

4. Reward and Forgiveness from Allah

Salah brings immense rewards from Allah. Every unit of prayer (Rak’ah) brings you closer to Allah’s mercy and rewards.

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “When a servant performs wudu (ablution) and prays, his sins are forgiven.” (Sahih Muslim)

Through regular Salah, the believer earns the pleasure of Allah and is granted forgiveness for their sins. Even if the believer sins, regular prayer can serve as an expiation of those sins.

5. A Means of Guidance and Protection

Salah is a source of guidance and protection from evil and harmful influences.

Surah Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Qur’an, which is recited in every prayer, is a supplication for guidance: “Guide us to the straight path” (Al-Fatiha, 1:6). This verse is a constant reminder that prayer is a tool for seeking Allah’s direction in life.

Salah also provides protection from sinful behavior. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The five daily prayers are a shield for the believer.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)

Prayer serves as a safeguard against temptations, distractions, and negative emotions, helping the believer remain focused on the right path.

6. Salah Strengthens Patience and Discipline

Salah cultivates patience (sabr) and discipline in a Muslim’s life. The act of praying five times a day at specific times—no matter where you are or what you are doing—requires dedication and self-discipline.

It trains the heart and mind to resist distractions and prioritize the worship of Allah. Regular prayer also helps develop a sense of routine, which in turn fosters consistency in other aspects of life.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “The best of deeds are those done consistently, even if they are small.” (Bukhari)

7. A Source of Peace and Tranquility

Salah offers inner peace and tranquility, especially when performed with khushu’ (humility and focus).

During Salah, a believer disconnects from the stresses and worries of the world, taking a moment to focus on Allah and the Hereafter. The physical movements of prostration (Sujood), in particular, promote a sense of humility and submission, while also providing relief from worldly pressures.

Allah says in the Qur’an: “Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times. O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (Al-Baqarah 2: 3-4)

Through prayer, Muslims find comfort in Allah’s remembrance, knowing they are in the presence of the One who controls all affairs.

8. A Source of Intercession on the Day of Judgment

On the Day of Judgment, Salah will serve as an intercessor for the believer, advocating for their forgiveness.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The first action for which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Judgment is his prayer. If it is good, then he will be successful, but if it is deficient, then he will fail.” (Tirmidhi)

Regular Salah is an investment in the Hereafter, ensuring that a person has the means to stand in front of Allah with a clean record.

9. Elevates the Status of the Believer

Salah raises the status of a believer, both in this world and the Hereafter. Every prayer offers an opportunity for spiritual advancement and closeness to Allah.

Allah says in the Qur’an: “And establish the prayer, and give zakah, and bow with those who bow.” (Al-Baqarah, 2:43). This verse indicates that prayer brings the believer closer to a higher rank in the sight of Allah.

10. It is a Means of Gratitude

Salah allows a believer to express their gratitude and appreciation to Allah for His countless blessings. Through regular prayers, a Muslim acknowledges Allah’s greatness and mercy, and in return, Allah bestows His blessings upon the worshipper.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “When you perform the prayer, speak to your Lord as if you are seeing Him, and if you cannot see Him, know that He sees you.” (Sahih Muslim)

11. Brings Unity and Strength to the Community

Salah in congregation (Jama’ah) brings Muslims together and strengthens the bonds of unity and brotherhood in the Muslim community.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of congregational prayer, saying: “The prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times superior to the prayer offered individually.” (Bukhari)

This communal aspect of Salah serves to unite the hearts of the believers, fostering a sense of solidarity and collective worship.

12. A Reminder of the Hereafter

Salah is a constant reminder of the Hereafter and the Day of Judgment. Every prayer serves as a means to detach from the temporary world and refocus on the eternal life.

The act of facing the Kaaba in Mecca symbolizes the direction towards the ultimate goal of a believer—the eternal life in Paradise.

VIRTUES IN SAWM

Sawm (fasting) during Ramadan and throughout the year is one of the key pillars of Islam. Fasting is a deeply spiritual practice, not only meant to abstain from food and drink but also to purify the soul, strengthen self-discipline, and draw closer to Allah. The virtues of Sawm are many and affect both the individual fasting believer and the wider community. Let’s explore the main virtues of Sawm based on the Qur’an, Hadith, and the experiences of Muslims.

1. A Pillar of Islam

Sawm is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which makes it a fundamental act of worship for every Muslim. Allah says in the Qur’an:“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” (Al-Baqarah, 2:183)

By fulfilling this obligation, a Muslim demonstrates their obedience to Allah and commitment to the Islamic faith.

2. A Means of Taqwa (God-consciousness)

Taqwa (piety or God-consciousness) is the ultimate goal of fasting. Allah says in the Qur’an:“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting that you may become righteous (taqwa).” (Al-Baqarah, 2:183)

Fasting helps a person develop self-control over their desires, purifies the heart from arrogance, pride, and greed, and brings the believer closer to Allah by enhancing their awareness of Him. By abstaining from food, drink, and sinful actions, one increases their taqwa and becomes more mindful of Allah in all aspects of their life.

3. The Expiation of Sins

Fasting during Ramadan serves as a means of forgiveness for past sins. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:“Whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

The act of fasting, if done with sincerity and devotion, expiates minor sins and brings the believer a fresh start. It is a chance for spiritual renewal and a clean slate with Allah.

4. An Act of Humility and Submission

Sawm is a powerful act of humility and submission. Through fasting, a person recognizes their dependence on Allah for sustenance and realizes that Allah is the Sustainer of all creation.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:“Fasting is a shield; when one of you is fasting, let him not indulge in obscenity or ignorance, and if someone fights or insults him, let him say, ‘I am fasting.’” (Bukhari)

This teaches the fasting person self-control in both actions and words, which is essential for developing patience and humility.

5. Spiritual and Physical Benefits

Fasting during Ramadan offers spiritual benefits like purification of the heart and increased devotion, but it also has several physical benefits.

-The cleansing of the body: The digestive system gets a chance to rest and detoxify, promoting physical health.

-Increased focus: Fasting helps reduce distractions, which leads to improved concentration on spiritual activities, such as prayer, reading the Qur’an, and reflection.

6. The Rewards Are Immense – A Special Reward from Allah

Allah promises great rewards for those who fast, with a special emphasis on the reward being from Him alone. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:“Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except fasting. It is for Me, and I will reward it.” (Sahih Bukhari)

This highlights the exclusivity of the reward for fasting. Unlike other acts of worship, fasting is something that is done secretly and sincerely for Allah, and its reward is unparalleled.

7. A Means of Gratitude and Reflection

Fasting teaches a person to be grateful for the blessings they have in life, especially for the things they often take for granted, like food and water. During Ramadan, Muslims reflect on their privileges, the needs of the poor, and the mercy of Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged gratitude during fasting, saying:“The fasting person has two moments of happiness: when he breaks his fast, and when he meets his Lord.” (Bukhari)

This teaches the believer to appreciate what they have and realize that all blessings come from Allah.

8. The Reward of Paradise (Jannah)

One of the most profound virtues of fasting is the promise of Paradise. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“In Paradise, there is a gate called Ar-Rayyan, through which only those who fast will enter on the Day of Judgment.” (Bukhari)

Those who fast will be called through the gate of Ar-Rayyan, where they will be granted entry to Jannah without account, as a reward for their devotion and self-control during their fasting.

9. Develops a Sense of Community

Fasting during Ramadan brings Muslims together, fostering a sense of solidarity and brotherhood. From the collective act of fasting during the day to breaking the fast with family and the community (Iftar), there is a sense of shared spiritual experience.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“The fasting person is the guest of Allah, and it is the responsibility of the host to ensure that the guest is satisfied.” (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah)

The communal aspects of fasting, such as sharing meals and offering support to the poor and needy, strengthen social ties and promote a spirit of generosity and compassion.

10. A Shield Against Sin

Fasting serves as a shield from many types of sins, including those of the eyes, tongue, and mind. It helps Muslims to avoid sinful behavior by teaching them discipline and mindfulness.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“Fasting is a shield, so when one of you is fasting, let him not engage in foul speech or act in an ignorant manner.” (Bukhari)

By keeping away from sinful actions and thoughts, fasting creates an environment where the believer can focus purely on worship and self-improvement.

11. Fasting for the Sake of Allah Grants Special Mercy

Fasting is an act of worship that is deeply personal and private, which is why it earns special mercy from Allah. Since the person fasting is abstaining from food, drink, and desires purely for Allah’s sake, it is a sign of deep devotion.

Allah’s mercy is especially near to those who fast in sincerity. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:“Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Bukhari)

12. A Time for Spiritual Renewal

Ramadan, in particular, serves as a time for spiritual renewal, where believers have the opportunity to strengthen their relationship with Allah. Fasting is a form of detachment from the material world, allowing Muslims to focus on their spiritual needs, increasing their devotion through extra acts of worship like:

-Reading the Qur’an

-Increasing acts of charity

-Night prayers (Taraweeh)

13. Fasting is a Source of Peace

Fasting, especially during Ramadan, brings a sense of inner peace and tranquility. The quiet and reflective moments of the fast, combined with the prayer and supplication, help the believer to reconnect with Allah and experience spiritual peace in their hearts.

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Ramadan is a month whose beginning is mercy, its middle is forgiveness, and its end is freedom from the fire.” (Ibn Khuzaymah)

VIRTUES IN ZAKAT AND SADAQAH

Zakat and Sadaqah are two key practices in Islam that promote generosity, social welfare, and spiritual growth. Each of these acts of charity has its own set of virtues and benefits, both for the giver and the receiver.

Virtues of Zakat (Obligatory Charity)

Purification of Wealth:

Zakat purifies the wealth of the person giving it. The term “zakat” itself means “purification” or “growth.” By giving a portion of wealth (usually 2.5% annually), the person cleanses their money and increases their spiritual blessings.

2. Strengthens Social Justice:

Zakat helps bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, ensuring a more equitable distribution of wealth in society. It acts as a means to help those who are struggling financially.

Spiritual Reward:

Zakat is not just a social responsibility; it is a means of earning reward from Allah (SWT). It is an act of worship that is highly rewarded. The Qur’an states that those who give zakat will receive a multiplied reward.

Disciplining the Self:

By giving zakat, a person learns to detach themselves from materialism and greed, teaching self-control and the importance of prioritizing the needs of others over personal wealth.

Prevention of Hoarding:

Zakat encourages circulation of wealth and prevents the accumulation of wealth by a few, ensuring it is utilized for the welfare of society.

Social Cohesion:

It fosters a sense of community and solidarity, as those who are in need are given assistance, and society as a whole is encouraged to help one another.

Promotes Gratitude:

By giving to those in need, individuals are reminded of their own blessings and are encouraged to be thankful for what they have.

Virtues of Sadaqah (Voluntary Charity)

Endless Rewards:

Sadaqah is not limited to financial donations. It can also include acts of kindness like helping someone, offering a smile, or even sharing knowledge. Every small good deed done with the intention to please Allah is considered sadaqah.

Protection from Hardships:

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that sadaqah protects from calamities and misfortunes. It acts as a shield, protecting the giver from negative events in life.

Spiritual Elevation:

Giving sadaqah increases one’s closeness to Allah. It’s an act that purifies the soul and increases one’s level of faith, bringing peace to the heart.

Intercession on the Day of Judgment:

Acts of sadaqah can intercede for the giver on the Day of Judgment, helping them to attain forgiveness and salvation. The Prophet (PBUH) mentioned that sadaqah will act as a shade for the believer on the Day of Reckoning.

Strengthening the Bond Between People:

Sadaqah builds stronger relationships between individuals, as it fosters a spirit of compassion, empathy, and support. It creates bonds of goodwill and community.

Increasing One’s Wealth:

In a spiritual sense, sadaqah is believed to increase the giver’s wealth, though not necessarily in a materialistic way. The blessings of sadaqah can come in forms such as more barakah (blessings) in life, increased contentment, or spiritual prosperity.

Cleansing the Heart:

Sadaqah is an act that removes negative traits such as greed, arrogance, and selfishness. It purifies the heart and promotes a sense of humility and compassion.

Encouraging Empathy and Sympathy:

By regularly giving sadaqah, a person becomes more empathetic and develops a deeper understanding of the struggles of others, which can lead to greater kindness and social awareness.

VIRTUES IN HAJJ

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and it holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims around the world. It is a journey of devotion, purification, and personal transformation. The virtues of Hajj are not limited to the act itself, but extend to the rewards and spiritual growth that come with it.

Here are some of the key virtues of Hajj:

1. Purification of Sins

•	Complete Forgiveness

•	Hajj is a powerful means of atoning for past sins. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah, and does not engage in indecent speech or act wickedly, will return (from Hajj) as free from sin as the day his mother bore him” (Sahih al-Bukhari). This means that a person who performs Hajj sincerely and with the right intentions will be forgiven for their sins and start anew.

•	Spiritual Cleansing

•	Hajj represents a total purification of the heart and soul. The physical and emotional demands of the pilgrimage help cleanse the heart from pride, arrogance, and worldly distractions.

2. Strengthening Faith and Taqwa (God-Consciousness)

•	Renewed Spirituality

•	The journey of Hajj allows the pilgrim to renew their relationship with Allah. The rituals performed during Hajj, such as standing in Arafat, the Tawaf (circling the Kaaba), and the Sa’i (walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah), all deepen the pilgrim’s sense of connection to Allah. It is a time for increased devotion, reflection, and submission to God’s will.

•	Heightened Awareness of Allah

•	The vastness of the pilgrimage, the unity of millions of Muslims, and the sacredness of the holy sites all contribute to a heightened sense of God-consciousness (taqwa). Pilgrims are reminded of the fleeting nature of this world and the eternity of the Hereafter.

3. Unity of the Muslim Ummah (Community)

•	Brotherhood and Solidarity

•	One of the most striking aspects of Hajj is the unity it fosters among Muslims from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and nations. All Muslims, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or socio-economic status, wear simple white garments (ihram) and perform the same rituals, symbolizing the equality of all before Allah. This sense of brotherhood and equality is a powerful reminder that the true bond between Muslims is based on faith, not worldly differences.

•	Global Muslim Gathering

•	Hajj brings together millions of Muslims from all over the world, making it a unique event in the history of humanity. This gathering fosters mutual understanding and strengthens the sense of a global Muslim community.

4. Demonstrating Humility

•	Submission to Allah

•	The rituals of Hajj require submission to the will of Allah. Pilgrims leave behind their comforts, undergo physical hardships, and perform rites that humble them. This teaches them humility, reminding them that they are servants of Allah, not masters of their own destinies.

•	Equality Before Allah

•	The simplicity of the Ihram garment signifies that all people are equal in the eyes of Allah. No one is superior because of their wealth, status, or appearance. This serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of humility, both during Hajj and in daily life.

5. Opportunity for Dua (Supplication)

•	The Day of Arafat

•	The Day of Arafat (the 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah) is considered one of the holiest days of the Islamic calendar. It is said that on this day, Allah is closest to His servants. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The best of supplications is the supplication on the Day of Arafat” (Tirmidhi). It is a day when all pilgrims stand at the plain of Arafat in prayer, seeking forgiveness and making personal supplications.

•	Dua is Accepted

•	The Hadiths mention that on the Day of Arafat and during the Hajj rituals, Allah is especially attentive to the supplications of His servants, promising to accept them.

6. Fulfillment of a Major Pillar of Islam

•	Obligation for Those Who Can Afford It

•	Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for Muslims who meet certain conditions: they must be physically and financially able to undertake the journey. The fulfillment of this important religious obligation is considered a major act of worship and a manifestation of one’s commitment to their faith.

7. Reward and Multiplication of Good Deeds

•	Immense Rewards

•	Performing Hajj with sincerity brings enormous rewards. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “An accepted Hajj brings no less than Paradise” (Sahih Muslim). Pilgrims receive numerous rewards during and after Hajj, including forgiveness of sins, spiritual elevation, and the promise of eternal reward in the Hereafter.

•	Blessings in This Life and the Hereafter

•	Hajj is a means of drawing closer to Allah, and the rewards are not limited to the Hereafter. Pilgrims often find that their lives are blessed with peace, contentment, and prosperity after completing the pilgrimage.

8. Emphasis on the Afterlife (Akhirah)

•	Focus on the Eternal

•	The entire experience of Hajj, from leaving home to the rituals in Mecca and Medina, is a constant reminder of the transient nature of this world and the importance of focusing on the Hereafter. The pilgrim is reminded of death, resurrection, and the ultimate meeting with Allah.

•	Remembrance of Prophets and Their Sacrifices

•	During Hajj, pilgrims remember the sacrifices of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his family, as well as the willingness of Prophet Isma’il (Ishmael) to submit to Allah’s command. These acts of faith, submission, and sacrifice during Hajj serve to remind the pilgrim of their own duty to Allah and their preparation for the eternal life to come.

9. Spiritual Elevation and Personal Transformation

•	Many pilgrims return from Hajj with a renewed sense of purpose and a stronger commitment to living an Islamic life. Hajj provides an opportunity for deep personal reflection and change, allowing individuals to leave behind past mistakes and begin afresh with a purified heart.

•	The pilgrimage teaches patience, as the crowds, long lines, and physical exhaustion require perseverance. It also cultivates gratitude, as pilgrims witness the blessings they have and the significance of their spiritual journey.

10. A Pilgrimage of Peace

•	One of the important virtues of Hajj is the emphasis on peace. Pilgrims are prohibited from engaging in any form of arguing, fighting, or causing harm. This reinforces the idea that Hajj is a journey to purify the heart, and it teaches the importance of peace and harmony in relationships.
