Move away from tokenism. Rather on focusing on traditions and ceremonies, educators should be concerned about teaching the history of Indigenous people, the impact of this history, and the modern challenges faced by Indigenous communities across this country. This allows for Indigenous students to feel represented in a meaningful, and respectful, way.

It was incredible to watch the way this artist allowed the students to take charge and control the destiny of the project and end product. Furthermore, I believe in implementing as many land-based learning activities as possible, as several First Nation beliefs and practices originate on the Land and depend on the sustainability of the Land. One example of this is a traditional canoe trip. Our students planned a canoe trip that followed the traditional trading route of the local Anishnaabe people. We invited Elders on the trip who shared stories of their journeys on the river from decades ago. Finally, students worked with GIS experts to create a values map that holds the stories of the Elders on an interactive map software program.
-Tom Rivers

I appreciate that in many ways this is a structural and systemic issue. I think that this pathway requires intentional steps by school leadership to adjust hiring practices to be more equitable and socially just for indigenous communities. For the Junior classroom, I believe that this might translate to students witnessing leadership, influence, and authority coming from indigenous voices. In the school that might be the teacher or principal or another school leader. If this hasn't happened yet I think it would be valuable to learn directly from a leader in the indigenous community, a guest speaker, an elder, an indigenous leader for an organization, government officials, etc.

Ian Eatock

I appreciate when Dr. Luke says that symbolic gestures can quickly lead to tokenism without the appropriate follow up. I think about land acknowledgement as an example. I believe all students should have an answer as to why they do that, what it means to them, what it means to indigenous communities, and why it is important. These discussions are key to solidify the real meaning of important gestures and keep open the door for future conversations.

Ian Eatock

Pathway 1 and 3 are very entwined with each other, so I'm going to discuss them both here. The more educators are exposed to the indigenous culture, the more they will be able to understand the knowledge and issues. Once there is a comprehensive understanding, then we can start implementing these ideas into curriculum in a way that is more culturally meaningful. A very simple example for instance, would be to look at the issues surrounding native and commercial fishing rights (particularly on the east coast). This topic includes human rights, law, hunting, trapping, conservation and stewardship, ecology, etc. Any of these topics could be worked in to curriculum, but the knowledge of the issue's existence needs to be there first.

I'm finding this one to be the most difficult to follow through on. Not in terms of implementation - there could be committees, councils, clubs, appointees, trustees, etc. for almost any issue that you like involving community leadership. The thing I find difficult to wrap my head around is in a school like mine, who are you leading? The answer can't be "Indigenous students" (there simply aren't many to lead) - it has to be "all students". These leadership groups need to find a way to resonate with all groups of people and frankly, I'm going to have to give this a lot more thought before I have a really good answer as to how to do that!
