Michigan Water Systems Have Higher Lead Levels Than Flint

By: Amira Barkaji
1. Seventy-one water system in Michigan have higher led levels than the city of Flint, which resulted from federally-required testing.
2. In the first six months of this year, 71 water systems had higher concentrations of lead than Flint. Just 24 systems had more lead than the city in the second half of 2016.
3. Thirty-six of those water systems registered 10 percent of homes with 10 ppb of lead or more during the first six months of the year, meaning the systems would be above the lead limit proposed by Gov. Rick Snyder earlier this year.
4. Island Lake Apartments in Livingston County, which registered the highest lead level of any water system in the state at 82 ppb, also had elevated lead in water (37 ppb) levels during testing in the last six months of 2016, according to state records.

5. If lead concentrations exceed an action level of 15 ppb or copper concentrations exceed an action level of 1.3 ppm in more than 10 percent of customer taps sampled, the system must take action to control corrosion.
This is an important issue for Michigan because there are plenty of side effects that go along with having lead poisoning. Some are so detrimental that they hinder a child's growth and hurt their brains.
 http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2017/10/71_michigan_water_systems_had.html?appSession=7ZA44762HPS6UJ25N40V79CL62L19JJ0LGX1N9CN8MQW3E1E80U7UPLIWPOD36X5415BG5LXF7DOH79VC8W45182MWH51725O5953GD4CYIJIH09BW9812TD1E14Y758

Amira: I heard about this and many people were not happy with the idea of it because they thought that it was unfair. A news station was discussing this topic and they stated that one woman was pulled over and wasn't even intoxicated. I think its a good idea because it will help to minimize deadly accidents from people taking drugs. I understand why people are opposed but I think it is a safer idea for all in the long-term.

I would hope that the efforts by the DPS system would take hold and that the students of Detroit will be able to finally take part in a healthy learning environment. While I do support the revitalization of Detroit, I find it surprising that nothing was mentioned about helping its residents maintain safer neighborhoods etc. Bringing business into the city is fantastic, but two blocks down there are drug houses and abandoned buildings. I would hope they would consider doing something about that severe issue too.

According to the MLive article, they have to have suspension to pull over the vehicle. Not using your turn signal, erratic speeding, under speed, weaving, etc. If you are pulled over, in a daily drive currently, only if there is suspicion do they test us for DUI, I would assume the same principles would apply for this type of testing.
