This article also discusses the rates of obesity tripling within the last 20 years in developing countries which are adopting the western lifestyle. The western lifestyle, being one of decreased physical activity as well as an overconsumption of unhealthy foods, is responsible for most of these cases. Although the incidence of congenital heart disease is fairly similar worldwide, places such as Nigeria which have higher fertility rates, experience a much larger burden of supporting patients with CHD as there are simply just more of them.
