Demeter had several sons and daughters with many lovers. Persephone was the loving daughter of Demeter and Zeus. The god and goddess mated in the form of serpents. Demeter also had 2 children with her other brother, Poseidon. The myth states that when Demeter was crying over her loss of Persephone, she took form of a horse and hid from her brother. When Poseidon found her in the form of a stallion, he raped the goddess. This resulted in the birth of the horse Arion and the goddess Despoina. Demeter also had more offsprings including Eubulus, Philomelus, and more.

Demeter's Infamous Myth: Her Lost Daughter, Persephone

Persephone was the offspring of Zeus and Demeter. Graced with her mother's beauty and compassion, she had grown up into a beautiful, young goddess. However, this attracted the attention of Hades, God of the Underworld. One day, Persephone had been entranced by the sight of the most beautiful flower she had ever seen. As she tried to pluck it from the earth, the ground beneath her feet split in two. Hades had abducted Persephone and Demeter had been completely unaware, except for a pain in her heart that alerted her that something horrible had occurred. Upon realization of her daughter's disappearance, Demeter abandoned her duties of the Goddess of Harvest as all the plants on earth began to wither and die. Demeter traveled the earth, disguised as different mortals, in search of Persephone. Due to Demeter's demands, Zeus sent Hermes to the Underworld to retrieve Persephone. However, Hermes was greeted by a changed Persephone who was now the Queen of the Dead. Although Persephone had adapted well to her new life, she also knew the importance of her role as a daughter. Persephone reunited with her mother, Demeter and once again, the earth's harvest radiated with joy and life. Each spring, Persephone returns to the earth to reunite her mother and each winter, Persephone leaves to go to the Underworld and the crops die due to Demeter's mourning.
