"Im Westen nichts Neues" or "'In the West Nothing New" was the first novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque. The novel is critical of the war and was widely read not only in Weimar Germany but the whole world. This book would go on to be adapted into the American film "All Quiet on the Western Front" in 1930. The book is one of the first pieces of World War One media to criticize the government, media, and larger attitude of European nations for glorifying warfare.

"The Donkeys" was a book written by Alan Clark around the 50th anniversary of the First World War. This book is famous for the phrase "Lions led by Donkeys" implying that the average soldier knew better than their commanding officers. Clark's book places the blame for the needless brutality of trench warfare squarely on the shoulders of the officers of the involved nations. This book is no longer seen as credible within the contemporary study of the conflict as major portions of Clark's argument as unsubstantiated with valid evidence.
