However, a 2006 poll indicated that only about 19% of Greek Cypriots attended church services once a week. Maronite Catholics, Armenian Orthodox, and Roman Catholics (referred to as Latins) are recognized as primary minority religious groups. There are about 2,000 members of the Jewish community in the Greek-controlled region. Nearly 98% of the Turkish Cypriots are Sunni Muslims, though only about 8% attend weekly religious services.(Cyprus 167)

"Cyprus." Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations, edited by Timothy L.

The 1974 coup and the Turkish armed intervention badly disrupted the economy. Physical destruction and the displacement of about a third of the population reduced the output of the manufacturing, agricultural, and service sectors. The lands occupied by Turkish forces accounted for about 70% of the country's prewar economic output. In general, the Greek Cypriot zone recovered much more quickly and successfully than the Turkish-held region, which was burdened with the weaknesses of Turkey's economy as well as its own. Scarcities of capital and skilled labor, the lack of trade and diplomatic ties to the outside world, and the consequent shortage of development aid have aggravated the problems of northern Cyprus. In the south, on the other hand, tourism has exceeded prewar levels, foreign assistance has been readily available, and the business community has benefited from the transfer to Cyprus of the Middle Eastern operations of multinational firms driven from Beirut by the Lebanese civil war.The Republic of Cyprus saw strong economic growth throughout the 1990s. In 1992 the economy grew by over 8%. In 1995 and 1996 growth was more modest, but still robust. Growth slumped in 1997 to 3%, which was followed by three years of recovery. The global slowdown of 2001 impacted Cyprus's vulnerable economy. Although growth returned in 2002, it was at an anemic 2% level due mainly to the sharp decline in tourism following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. Inflation and unemployment continued at low levels. From 1992 to 2001, the weighted annual rate of inflation was 2.48%, according to CIA estimates.(Cyprus 171)

"Cyprus." Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations, edited by Timothy L.

he 1960 constitution of the Republic of Cyprus respects the two existing ethnic communities, Greek and Turkish, by providing specifically for representation from each community in the government. The president must be Greek and the vice president Turkish. Under the constitution, these officers are elected for five years by universal suffrage by the Greek and Turkish communities, respectively; each has the right of veto over legislation and over certain decisions of the Council of Ministers. (The Council of Ministers is made up of seven Greek and three Turkish ministers, designated by the president and vice president jointly.) Legislative authority is vested in the 80-member Republic of Cyprus House of Representatives, elected by the two chief communities in the proportion of 56 Greek and 24 Turkish. In January 1964, following the outbreak of fighting, Turkish representatives withdrew from the house, and temporary constitutional provisions for administering the country were put into effect. On 13 February 1975, subsequent to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the Turkish Cypriot Federated State (TCFS) was proclaimed in the northern part of the island. A draft constitution, approved by the state's constituent assembly on 25 April, was ratified by the Turkish Cypriot community in a referendum on 8 June. On 15 November 1983 the TCFS proclaimed itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), separate and independent from the Republic of Cyprus. In June 1985 TRNC voters approved a new constitution that embodied most of the old constitution's articles. The new constitution, however, increased the size of the legislative assembly to 50 seats(Cyprus 170)

"Cyprus." Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations, edited by Timothy L.

Cyprus is the eastern island in the Mediterranean. Because of this location, through the centuries, it was a bridge between the cultures of Europe and East. During 4000 b.d, the first immigrants coming from Minor Asia, immigrated to Cyprus, and brought to the island the rural civilization. The remains of Chirokitia village are classified in this period. The village people were using jugs made of stone and living in houses with mud walls. Afterwards they started using ceramic plates made of argilio. A lot of the foundings of that period were decorated with beautiful painted designs.

During the 13th century-from this century, the period of copper begins-Cyprus trade was rapidly expanded into many countries. Also at that time Cyprus was a spiritual center after it came across with different Aegean civilizations. At that time the village Engomi was the most important center of sea-trade, and was controlled by the Achaean Greeks.

Concerning the arts, Cyprus was completely independent from Greece; it was more influenced by the East countries. There are no remains from public buildings, except from the Kingdom in Bouni(5th century b.d), which is far away from the Greek architecture standards. Common characteristics of all the ancient temples is the big inner yard surrounded with other smaller yards and small rooms.

Sculpture came up for first time at the 7th century b.d. At the beginning somebody can observe Assyrian influence and then Egyptian. Afterwards the influence of the Greek art is obvious, where the subjects were taken from real life incidents.http://www.kypros.org/CyprusPanel/cyprus/arts.html In my research i found out that their art started out as just jugs

Probably the most famous Cypriot dish, Halloumi’s popularity now extends to many countries throughout Europe and the Middle East. Because of the cheese’s high melting point, it possesses the rare ability to be easily fried or grilled, completely redefining the expectations of ‘grilled cheese’. Distinguishable by its mild salty flavor and rubbery texture, the delicacy has become a favorite among vegetarians and non-vegetarians all around the world. The cheese is produced by combining a mixture of goat and sheep milk before then being set with rennet. This is an unusual practice due to the absence of acid-producing bacteria in any part of the process. Halloumi can also be served cold alongside freshly sliced watermelon, and this is commonly eaten as an appetizer or a dessert Cyprus.https://theculturetrip.com/europe/cyprus/articles/the-10-best-foods-in-cyprus/ In my research I found out that Cyprus famous dish is Halloumi.

The structure of Turkish Cypriot society changed dramatically during the twentieth century, especially after World War II. The main force for change was the growth of a modern and prosperous economy that required a variety of occupations, encouraged urbanization, made education more accessible, and permitted more contact with the outside world. The de facto partition of the island in 1974 also strongly changed how Turkish Cypriots lived. The evolution of a Western-style family out of the traditional family structure was perhaps the most socially significant of these changes.https://photius.com/countries/cyprus/society/cyprus_society_social_structure.html

In my research I discovered that there social organization is similar to the western life style of the U.S.A
