The policy was initially articulated by Kennan in a 1946 cable, which later became a foundational document for US Cold War strategy. Containment, while aimed at preventing direct military conflict between the superpowers, indirectly led to proxy conflicts and conflicts in other regions where the Cold War's ideological and political struggles were played out.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was a really important event because it ended the separation between East and West Germany.
