The name "Haroun" means "mountain of strength," "on high," or "honored" in Hebrew, which makes me think of traits like power, worth, and dignity. The fictional Caliph of Baghdad, is is who Haroun is named after. He is a main character in many Arabian Nights stories and is known for being brave, smart, and supportive of the arts. This historical and cultural connection gives Haroun's character a sense of strength, suggesting that he has these qualities in real life. Haroun shows amazing bravery and determination as he faces the challenges on his mission. He stays strong, like a mountain, even when things get hard. So, I think Rushdie chose this name to show how strong, brave, and determined Haroun is, connecting him to both his childhood and the traditional idea of a brave hero.

In the book "Haroun and the Sea of Stories", the character Haroun is the main character of the story. He contributes to the book mainly because he tries to bring back his father, Rashid's, storytelling gift after him losing his gift due to Haroun telling him that his stories weren't real. In order to do this, Haroun goes on a journey, determined to make up for the problems he caused. Along the way, he meets all these fantasy characters that Rashid told stories about, including a water genie named Iff (who helps guide Haroun), and a floating gardener named Mali. These characters helped Haroun understand how important the Sea of Stories is, and that it contains all of the world's stories. He also learns that the evil figure Khattam-Shud wants to take control this sea and silence all stories. This creates a large battle between Haroun and Khattum-Shud, which Haroun is successful in defeating the evil figure, restoring the Sea of Stories and his father's storytelling gift.

A quote in the story that reflects on the character, Haroun's, personality/role was when after he had an outburst with his father saying that stories weren't real which caused his father to lose his storytelling gift. He tries to make up for his actions, saying " I started all this off... It's up to me to make things right" (27). This quote describes Haroun's role in the story, and that he has to be the one to bring back his father's gift. It also portrays Haroun's personality as understanding and responsible because he understands the fact that he was the reason for this mess, and made a mistake out of anger, and because of this, he tries to make up for it, which also shows responsibility.

A person that is similar to Haroun is Malala Yousafzai, they both show a connection to the world. Haroun loves stories, and Malala has a passion for education. They are both brave because Malala speaks out for girls' education despite threats from the Taliban, similar to Haroun he goes on a dangerous mission to save his father’s storytelling abilities. They both also show adversity because Malala survived an assasination attempt and Haroun perseveres through his challenges. A quote that shows this from Haroun is, "I'm not afraid of you... You don't scare me." (Rushdie Chapter 10). This shows Haroun's bravery against Khattam-Shud, and him persevering his dreams by defeating Khattam-Shud and regaining Rashid's storytelling ability. Malala also shows this bravery by stating, "I told myself, Malala, you have already faced death. This is your second life. Don’t be afraid—if you are afraid, you can’t move forward." (Yousafzai). After surviving an attack by the Taliban, Malala continues to advocate for education. Her courage mirrors Haroun as she remains fearless against forces that attempt to silence her voice. Both Haroun and Malala use their voices to protect something essential: Haroun fights for the right to tell stories, while Malala fights for the right to education. Their bravery and resilience against oppressors and antagonists make them both powerful advocates for freedom.

Haroun is a hero because he tries to solve Rashid's issue that he is not able to tell stories the story also is always revolving around him. He goes on a journey to save his father’s storytelling ability and restore the Sea of Stories. Haroun also faces challenges like battling Khattam-Shud. In most books or movies the main hero always battles the villian. In this case Haroun battles Khattam-Shud, so we can ensure that Haroun is the Hero. Haroun is the person who beat Khattam-Shud. A quote that shows the story and why Haroun is a hero is, "I'm not afraid of you... You don't scare me" (Rushdie Chapter 10).

When it comes to Haroun and the Sea of Stories, the name "Mali" is linked to a character's personality in a number of important ways. Mali comes from the Latin words for "hardworking" or "jasmine flower," which describe qualities like loyalty, growth, and beauty that are important to Mali's role in the story. The name also means "gardener," which is a perfect fit for Mali's role as a "floating gardener" who cares for the story streams and keeps them healthy. In the same way that a gardener takes care of a garden with care and precision, Mali is committed to growing and protecting the land of stories. Mali's name shows what kind of person she is and how much she cares about keeping the story streams going.

In Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Mali is the perfect example of a loyal retainer. Mali always helps Haroun in his search. She goes above and beyond to take on a key part in his plan to defeat Khattam-Shud and bring the Sea of Stories back to life. Mali bravely follows him into dangerous areas, such as the Chupwalas' territory. When she has to deal directly with the Chups to protect and help Haroun, she does so even though it puts her in great danger. This shows how committed she is. She shows how helpful she is when she cuts out the forest so Haroun can go on. Mali not only helps Haroun, but she also goes up against the Cups in the story, showing more guts and selflessness than a normal sidekick would. Throughout the story, Mali shows that she is strong, loyal, and dedicated, making Haroun succeed.

Mali is a "floating gardener" in Haroun and the Sea of Stories. This is a very important job because she is in charge of keeping the story streams going. A lot of stories and ideas are carried by them through the Sea of Stories. Mali's job is to keep these lines untangled so that the stories stay clear, lively, and interesting. She has to pay close attention to every detail and know how the stories are connected for her job. If there is one mistake, it could change the way the stories flow and what they mean. Mali takes care of the story streams to protect the purity of storytelling. This way, each story can develop without getting lost or jumbled with other stories. This job is hard and important. The story streams would get mixed up without Mali's careful attention, making things hard to follow and the story loses its flow. Mali works hard to keep the Sea of Stories full of different and creative stories, just like a real farmer would.

'Untwisting twisted Story Streams. Also unlooping some.'" This quote describes how Mali makes sure that the stories in the stream don't get polluted or mixed up, and how she gets rid of elements that can harm the stories. It also shows that she cleans up Khattum-Shud's messes. This quote portrays Mali's personality as responsible because of how she takes care of the stream, and how she makes sure that she does her job that she's entitled to correctly.
