The more we read the better we write  (quot)

“Reading helps learners to consolidate what they already know and to extend it. The only reliable way to learn a language is through massive and repeated exposure to it in context precisely what Extensive Reading provides” (Maley). Unfortunately Teachers don’t use ER often as time is not sufficient, it is too costly , and they feel pressed to conform to syllabi and textbooks.

However, and I speak for my personal experience, ER helps teachers to keep their own use of English fresh and to be better informed.

My first experience with ER dates back to 2006/7 when I taught English in Empoli at liceo Artistico. My pupils of the first year were particularly brilliant in English but their textbooks were thought for less skilled children. So I thought to start the ER of David Copperfield graded version. Once a week the students read some pages of the book in class and did some exercises. Their skills in writing and reading improved.

During the years I haven’t  experienced ER anymore for lack of time . 

However thanks to the new webtools and the use of Lim I’m thinking of planning an ER lesson about Frankenstein  also using  CLIL connections . 

The subject will be used in Secondary School II level and it will take into account such subjects as Science, Religion, Technology, Literature, History of Art and  students will learn new words concerning  them . Moreover they will be driven to make comparisons on how way of communicating has changed through the centuries. As Frankenstein starts as an epistolary novel students will be asked to re-write some of the letters of the novel as short text messages. I think this will be a very stimulating and funny experience for them
