- Charles Stanton who was the only one who know the route to Sutters fort became exausted and snow blind. His skeletal remaines were later found in the exact same area

- They completely ran out of food until Charles Stanton went ahead and came back with mules and supplies

- Staying a week in the pass to gather more strength would prove to be fatal

- Winter came early
