Since there were mountains nearby they acted as natural barriers which was great for protection if they ever got invaded or attacked

even with the mountain barriers, they still had access to many other civilizations which was good for trading

The river still provided some good things, along with crops and agriculture, they used to the river water to make mud bricks to build flood resistant buildings.
