Lizabeth runs out of fear and anger almost mindless to Miss Lottie's. The author describes the atmosphere as eerie more than complete darkness. Lizabeth feels like her world is falling apart. Which she compares to Miss Lottie's house. "foul and crumbling, a grotesque caricature." She felt the house look haunted, but wasn't afraid because she was also haunted emotionally. Lizabeth said she lost her mind from all the overwhelming emotions of the summer. She needed her mother who wasn't there and her father crying upset her. The author describes the hopelessness, poverty and fear she felt. All those emotions let to her impulse toward destruction.

The author says ''As the effects of the Depression cascaded across the US economy, millions of people lost their jobs. By 1930 there were 4.3 million unemployed; by 1931, 8 million; and in 1932 the number had risen to 12 million. By early 1933, almost 13 million were out of work and the unemployment rate stood at an astonishing 25 percent. Those who managed to retain their jobs often took pay cuts of a third or more.''. This quote supports my claim that people lost their jobs during The Great Depression and that it was hard for a lot of people at the time.
