Through the use of, genius illustrations conducted by Danica Novgorodoff we can clearly see the representations of each scene unfolding. Jason Reynolds interprets that violence is not always the answer. In other words, the “eye for an eye” mentality only serves to maintain a cycle of violence in which nothing ever changes unless someone is bold enough to break the cycle.

Long Way Down expresses the traumatic events that happened throughout William Holloman’s life. Rule number three states get revenge. William is put in that situation and must decide to follow the rules. However, he contemplates on following the rules. This represents that revenge and violence is futile and achieves nothing but pain.

Revenge is a topic heavily discussed in Jason Reynolds Long Way Down. Despite the readers preconceptions about revenge as a subject, Long Way Down provides a unique and neutral view of revenge and social norms around us. Throughout the book, through various characters, we are shown the effects of revenge. Events are told as they happen and the consequences of revenge are laid out. But Long Way Down never aims to antagonize or glorify revenge, merely present it as it is and allow the reader to come to their own conclusions about the value of revenge.

Jayson Reynolds, author of long way down successfully challenges the theme of revenge through its representation of the malicious cycle of gun violence due to great distrust in the justice system whilst Diana successfully portrays the expression of love and loyalty through murder. within the novel the concept of revenge is purposefully conveyed through aesthetic features, stylistic devices and visuals to expose the cultural assumptions of toxic masculinity, which results in a domino effect of violent retribution that is fuelled by trauma, thus evoking controversial perspectives Within the audience. Ultimately, Reynolds displays prevalent stereotypes within African American communities reinforcing preconceptions that children are not products of their environment and can create their own path breaking such strongholds and cycles.
