As an example we have water footprint used for growing rice, making different types of clothing, the gas we put on our cars, or the amount that is used on an entire multi-national company. The water footprint can also tell us how much is water being consumed in a particular place, country or globally, it can be measured in meter per tonne of production. 
This concept of water footprint helps us understand how our limits of freshwater are being consume and pollute, the impact it causes depends on where the water is taken, if it comes from a place where the water is scarce it can can cause a bigger impacts that need to be taken in action. 
This water is composer by three things green, blue and grey each of these refers to a different this such as rainfall, soil moisture and the volume of fresh water required for assimilation of pollutants (189)
