Paul S. Honda International Center - Study Abroad

The proposal to send Hawaiian youth abroad for education was introduced in the 1880 legislature of the Kingdom by Robert Hoapili Baker, a strong supporter of King Kalākaua. During King Kalākaua’s reign, students participated in study abroad programs in Italy, the United States, England, Scotland, Japan, and China. They studied various fields including engineering, medicine, art, ironwork, engraving, and language, in addition to receiving education in civil, military (in some cases), and diplomatic knowledge. (HSA: Hawaiian Youth Abroad Program 1880-1892)

The Paul S. Honda International Center is dedicated to promoting study abroad initiatives inspired by historical figures such as King Kalākaua, Queen Julia Kapiʻolani Napelakapuokakaʻe, and Queen Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamakaʻeha. These leaders advanced study abroad efforts for the people of Hawaiʻi, fostering a deeper understanding of the islands while creating opportunities for shared cultural and linguistic exchange around the world.

Lama Library (library history in Hawaiʻi)

I recently learned a bit about library history in Hawaiʻi from the Hawaiian Historical Society and Missions Houses Museum. The Honolulu Library & Reading Room Association (HLRRA) was formed in 1879 and located on the corner of Hotel and Alakea Streets (which is kitty corner to the present-day District Court). Aliʻi such as King Kalākaua, Queen Kapiʻolani, Queen Emma, and Princess Pauahi provided monetary support and donated books from their personal collections to HLRRA. Although the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System traces its roots back to HLRRA, HLRRA was initially a subscription library, with dues of $0.50 per month.

I appreciate what RW and Skye have said. I am interested in learning more about our Queen and the ʻāina which our campus stands on. It has been enriching hearing moʻolelo about Queen Kapiʻolani and the Lēʻahi area, but I don't know a lot and I don't know the moʻolelo well enough. Discovering the kaona in inoa ʻāina and other Hawaiian words excites me and I look forward to experiences that allow me to explore moʻolelo, ʻāina, and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. In response to Nāwaʻa's question, knowing about Queen Kapiʻolani and Lēʻahi would help show others we are from Kapiʻolani. ❤️
