Hinton wanted to explain the type of place Dally, Pony and Johnny were eating near Jay Mountain, a place where they sold burgers and fries and sodas at an inexpensive, low-key place. s. Everybody knows that’s what Dairy Queen does so instead of writing about the menu or just saying a “restaurant” she used the allusion.
