As Albrecht Dürer was the second son of the goldsmith Albrecht Dürer the Elder, he practiced at his father's goldsmith’s workshop to become a draftsman. Being thirteen, he greatly indicated his early skills in 1484 when he drew a self-portrait of himself. He then went on to work on Madonna with Musical Angels, a late Gothic style art piece. Once his father arranged for him to go under Michael Wohlgemuth’s supervision, he was able to oversee the painter and woodcut illustrator as an apprentice during 1486. Once three years of his apprenticeship has passed, Dürer decided to spend a large period of his early life to travel. One year later, he finished his first well-known painting; a portrait of his father.

Importance on Renaissance & Popular Works

A painter, printmaker, draftsman, designer, theoretician, and considered the most remarkable German artist during the Renaissance period, all started with Hercules and the Birds of Stymphalis. With his Renaissance-like free spirit incorporated into his work, he painted the mythology without any restraints as a free adaptation. However, the most popular and surprising work he did was a self-portrait of an elegant, high-titled version of himself. This gave an appearance of a typical Renaissance person through Dürer’s lenses; a rather conceited, entitled look. After he got back to Nürnberg from his second trip from Italy, he completed the Knight, Death and Devil, St. Jerome in His Study, and Melencolia I, his most impressive copperplate engravings. Debates were frequently sparked among the considerably immense sized engravings’ interpretations. Among many of his works, a portrait of his mother became his best portrait drawing ever known.

He proved to be an important part of the Renaissance with his detailed engravings and paintings that aimed to represent realistic and real dimensions of figures. This brought in new ideas that led to more precise and accurate human and animal sketches. Along with this, his works were accompanied with his free spirit to stretch and test his creativity. We can see how he influenced art and drawings today with the modern, realistic sizes and proportions on buildings and landscapes to the humans and animals within the art. By introducing the idea of adding practical thoughts and real, true ways human eyes see the world, it is shown how he impacted the next era and today in 2021.
