Student records should be defined; what is included in a student record? The adult/owner of that record should be able to determine who has access to their personal records and information. This should be clearly explained to the student (and possibly the parent) during the application process in order to set up the records’ access appropriately from the start. There are situations, however, where access will be granted to other entities, such as SEVIS records for certain international students, records regarding outcomes of sexual assault, military access to recruitment information, and others as required by law (Stone, 2002).
