Can you keep things that you post private or can everyone see it? For most people they have their accounts private, only allowing friends and family to see what they are posting and shared. For 14% of people their social media accounts are public and allows anyone to look and see what they are posting at any point in time and see their location at anytime. A study shows that teens nowadays think it is cool to have many followers on Instagram or Twitter and have a large amount friends on Facebook and Snapchat. While in this point in time in the world, it is not safe to just have anyone to be able to see everything about you have posted and see where you are at any point in the day. Yes, social media companies allow you to have a choice whether to have your accounts open or not, but on some of the social media sites it is hard to make you account 100% private. We have snapchat that allows people to see where you are always when you are on it. It shows everyone that you are in a house or in the open. So, it is not just like you are saying that you’re in Toronto they are showing right where you are, which is not safe or you or anyone that have their accounts open. For people that have set all their accounts private, they post something with say their friend and tag the location thinking that only people on their friends list will only ever see it but when someone on their friends list that has their account open for everyone to see. They go and re shares that picture, that was once private and only for friends and family’s eyes to see is now public for everyone to see. So even though that your social media accounts are set that you are private if one of your friends are not and they share something that you have posted with your location then, you are no longer only sharing with people that you know. It Is now being shared with anyone that searches your name or is just scrolling through their news feed and its something that relates to what they searched. So now not only is the photo or post that you just made is no longer private because someone re shared you post but if you have included your location anyone can see where you are and at what time you were there at. So, I will re ask at the question I asked at the beginning “is privacy dead?” The answer that I have come up with from the research that I have done is that I do think that there is a little bit a privacy left on social media about 50% but, if someone that you are friends with shares something of yours to the public then it does not matter if you account is private it is still shared out in the open for everyone to see.
