Introduction and Assessing Prior Knowledge

Hello, my name is Gisselle Rodgers, and I am excited to be in this class with you all. I am currently in my third semester of the Mental Health and Wellness Counseling program here at Angelo State. I currently work as a social media coordinator for a women’s health and wellness organization based in Houston. When I graduate I am hoping to move to a women’s mental health counselor position within the organization. One goal I want to take away from this course is to expand my knowledge of crisis intervention because I will be working with women who have experienced trauma and how I respond in that moment can make an individual feel either understood or dismissed.

When I reflect on my previous knowledge and experiences with mental health, I can see that I came into this field aware of the stigma surrounding mental health and treatment. I have always had the understanding that mental health challenges are more common than people realize, but the quiz showed me how widespread these issues really are. I missed questions that focused on statistics, which showed me that while I understood the existence of the problem, I did not fully grasp how many people are affected. Taking the quiz emphasized the importance of education and awareness for myself and others. On a personal level I have had my own experiences with anxiety and depression, which at times can be very overwhelming. However, navigating my own mental health has given me more empathy and perspective when supporting others dealing with their own mental health challenges. In my current roll, I have witnessed mental health crisis firsthand among women. I have seen the ways that trauma, stress, and even societal/ cultural pressure have led to crisis moments, and how crucial it is to respond in ways that feel safe and validating. In my future role as a women’s mental health counselor, I believe that learning about crisis, trauma, and mental illnesses is an important part of providing effective care. My goal of strengthening my knowledge of crisis intervention connects to my future role because I will be interacting with clients who are navigating overwhelming emotions and trauma that can lead to crisis.

A relevant resource is an article called “Trauma- Informed Crisis Intervention” by Adams, Blueford, and Diambra (2022). In the article they advocate for counselors to use a trauma informed lens when responding to crisis and the Seven Stage Crisis Intervention Model to provide structure during crisis. This stood out to me because it mentions that it reduces the risk of retraumatization and because it provides structure during a time an individual is vulnerable.

Adams, C. R., & Blueford J. (2022). Trauma- informed crisis intervention. Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theroy & Research, 49(3), 1-17.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/365982833_Trauma-Informed_Crisis_Intervention

Reflection

Throughout this course, I have experienced significant personal and professional growth in my understanding of crisis prevention and intervention. I began this course with a general with a general awareness of how critical a counselor’s response is during moments of crisis, but through the learning materials and course work, I now have a deeper appreciation for the skills, sensitivity, and structure that crisis response requires. I have learned how trauma informed care, empathy, ad active listening can completely change the outcome of a crisis situation by helping individuals feel safe, validated, and understood rather than dismissed. This learning process has helped me to recognize the importance of not just reacting in the moment but rather responding with purpose and grounding.

These lessons will play an important role in my future as a women’s mental health counselor. Working with women who have experienced trauma means that there may be moments of crisis and my ability to respond effectively will impact how supported they feel. Understanding crisis prevention allows me to identify early warning signs and intervene in certain situations before they escalate which creates a safer space for my clients to grow and heal.

The ACA Code of Ethics is important in my goal of becoming a women's mental health counselor because it serves as the foundational for how counselors are expected to practice responsibly and ethically. This code provides clear standards for maintaining professional boundaries, protecting client confidentiality, and promoting welare and dignity of every individual. In the context of working with women who are experiencing trauma, abuse, and barriers the ACA code of ethics ensures that I approach my work with cultural sensitivity, respect, and fairness.

Reflection

This assignment allowed me to gain a better understanding of how complex and interconnected mental health disorders can be and why early intervention is essential in preventing long term harm. Researching the definitions and causes of each of the disorders helped me see how certain conditions overlap and could possibly influence each other. I learned that while each disorder has its own distinct features, many share underlying risk factors such as trauma, genetics, environmental stressors, and social pressures. What stood out the most to me was how early recognition and treatment can drastically improve outcomes which can help individuals gain stability, build coping skills, and prevent symptoms from escalating into life threatening conditions.

Developmental Discussion on Trauma

Reflection

This assignment was one of the most eye opening learning experiences for me in understanding trauma, grief, and crisis response on a deeper level. Exploring the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) study and the different forms of trauma helped me to recognize how trauma can take many shapes and affect people in both direct and indirect ways. Also, learning about the gaps in the ACE study’s population also remined me of the importance of inclusivity and cultural awareness in mental health research and practices. Watching After Parkland was especially impactful because it gave faces to the theories I have studied. Seeing how survivors, families, and communities navigated the devastating effects of a school shooting highlighted how trauma is not a single moment but rather an ongoing process that impacts every part of an individual’s life. It also showed how healing can look different to everyone so people grieve quietly while others channel their pain into advocacy, action, and social change.

Our groups focus on dating violence required integrating mental health assessment, safety planning, and trauma informed approaches while remaining sensitive to diverse cultural and personal backgrounds. I learned how important it is to use evidence based tools like the danger Assessment and PHQ-9 to evaluate risk, identify warning signs, and provide early intervention before the situation escalates. Developing protocols for agency collaboration, referrals, and informed consent helped me to see how teamwork among counselors, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, and organizations can make crisis response more effective and coordinated. This project reminded me that that effective crisis prevention goes beyond immediate safety but also involves empowering survivors, promoting education, and creating systems that support long term healing.

Reflection

Reflecting on the ABC crisis intervention model assignment deepened my understanding of how structured, compassionate counseling can guide a client from being in crisis to stability and empowerment. Working through Melynda’s case helped me recognize the importance of first building a genuine relationship with the client through active listening, empathy, and being present which shows how even subtle behaviors like tone of voice, eye contact, and posture can create a safe supportive space. Breaking down her situation into physical, emotional, social, and cognitive needs revealed how crisis impacts every part of their live, and the importance of viewing clients holistically rather than focusing on a single issue. Developing an action plan emphasized how collaboration helps clients to regain a sense of control and direction while encouraging personal growth.
