What causes did people begin to take up to improve the world?

People started championing social reforms, such as workers' rights, women's suffrage, and child labor laws. Environmental conservation and public health initiatives were also gaining popularity.

What did Thomas Malthus predict?

He predicted that population growth would increase exponentially while food production would grow linearly, leading to inevitable shortages, famine, and societal collapse.

Give examples of new pollution affecting the world.

The rise of factories during the Industrial Revolution led to severe air pollution from coal burning, water pollution from untreated industrial waste being dumped into rivers, and soil contamination from the use of harmful chemicals and heavy metals.

Why did sanitation become so important?

As cities grew rapidly, poor sanitation led to outbreaks of diseases like chlorrea and typhoid. Improving sanitation through clean water, waste removal, and proper hygiene became essential to public health and reducing mortality rates.

How was the air pollution at this time?

Air pollution was a growing concern in urban areas. In his diary, John Evelyn writes in 1684 that smoke was so severe “hardly could one see across the street, and this filling the lungs with its gross particles exceedingly obstructed the breast, so as one would scarce breathe.”

How was the water pollution at this time?

Unlike grassy, forested areas, the water was running out to be muddy. This posed concerns for sanitized drinking water in the city.

What happened when the “Mother of the Forest” was cut down?

The Mother of the Forest, a tree 311 feet tall, had its bark stripped and shipped to England where it was put on display. Other trees were cut, with sections of their trunks for expositions in Philadelphia, New York, and elsewhere. The damage to Mother of the Forest and felling of other giant sequoias during the mid-1800s sparked public outcry and led to the conservation movement and the legal protection of these trees.

What lead people to believe there was a air pollution crisis?

The Donora, Pennsylvania air pollution disaster in 1948 led people to believe there was an air pollution crisis. A four-day weather inversion trapped toxic smoke from steel and zinc works, killing 22 people, hospitalizing 600, and sickening thousands more. The disaster depleted oxygen levels and thickened the air so much that cars couldn’t run, and medical staff had to go door-to-door giving oxygen. This event was one of the first major environmental disasters in the U.S. and spurred new air pollution studies and laws.
