Market research (designed to help producers of goods and services) and product evaluation (designed to help consumers of those products). The purpose of advertising is to remind consumers of the existence of that product and to provide persuasive information about it.

There are three common anomalies in the information-seeking process: First, the mysterious influence we call "taste" has a powerful role in the decision-making process. Second, personal connections have a powerful influence, whether they compel agreement (e.g., the advice of a friend or loved one) or disagreement (an overbearing salesperson). Depending on basic human emotions, these two influences can overwhelm any collection of facts, no matter how large or persuasive. Third, affluence and education can make a big difference in the sources of information people have access to and their propensity to pay attention to that information.

People can access information by news broadcasts, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, social media, and many personal conversations.

It is important to maintain continuity of information, to carefully record any relevant data, and to share information freely among team members.

The tendency to avoid certain information until you are ready to process it is balanced by a curiosity fueled by deep feelings. Information satisfies some emotional need to be reassured, to be comforted, to connect with others.

In all cases, searchers try to reduce their cognitive load by abandoning certain types of information, taking shortcuts to a state of satisfaction or decision.
Most search results, although incomplete and possibly even leading to failure, are sufficient to satisfy the searcher's needs at the time, a behavior known as satisficing.

Time pressure is also an important influencing factor in determining people's access to information.

Information seeking occurs when an information problem is difficult or intractable for an individual to solve. It is not defined by traditional groupings, but rather people from different backgrounds participate for various reasons. Urban explorers are mostly secretive, using code or nicknames even when posting photos on the web then deleting them shortly after. And while the purpose of urban exploration is considered by some to be discovery, by some to be adventure, and just as some locations become safe, people begin to complain and lose enthusiasm. Most urban explorers are there to preserve the sites they explore, or to document history and demonstrate photographic techniques.

The fact that people easily overgeneralize reminds me of an ancient Chinese idiom of "Three men become a tiger", which says that people are easily influenced by what most people say and easily believe what most people think without practicing it themselves.
People always believe that they can corroborate their beliefs and ignore the evidence.
When people are very detailed in their questionnaires, fewer people usually give feedback. If we want to find really detailed usage, we can take a close look at a small number of people.
People's thoughts are always changing so it is important to conduct another statistical test at regular intervals. The web-based questionnaires create challenges to the confidentiality of the research.

Job roles and tasks are important aspects that influence information needs. For example, engineers are influenced by different job functions, disciplines, career stages, etc. Accessibility of information, ease of use of information, and technical quality all influence the use of information. Also engineers will be informed by personal experience, textbooks and technical reports as sources of information while doctors are not the same. Different physicians have different sources of information needs, and in the past most physicians only had paper-based materials for information access, with high demands on their time, so these barriers, combined with massive information overload, undermine the ability of physicians to keep up with new developments in the field. Reliability, comprehensiveness, timeliness and cost are also factors that physicians consider when accessing information.

From the paper, we can see that during a crisis, too much information makes the content of each piece of information contradict with the others, so that people do not know what to believe. During a crisis people mostly trust people they know and trust or the people who have authoritative knowledge. While the government does not communicate openly and does not provide timely information so that people's trust in the government decreases.

I think during any crisis, such as the current Covid, people gather as much information as possible because they are afraid of the unknown things, but too many information elements make it difficult for people to have a unified standard of all the informations they got. The government usually chooses not to inform or reduce the negative coverage of the crisis in order to keep the whole society stable, but this behavior will make people deepen their distrust of the government and fear of the crisis.

We went to 14 Henrietta Street where we had a navigator to introduce us to the history of the museum. In each room there was a projector showing the use of each room in the history and the life of the people at that time. Some of the rooms were decorated in the style of the past, the marks on the walls and floors made it possible to imagine what life was like back then. It was a very vivid tour, especially when old photos and videos were shown, there was a feeling of time and space intersecting. And the mottled walls and handrails are also full of signs of age.
And about the navigator, first of all, at the beginning of the visit, he asked us to put the phone to silent mode, so that we could better immerse ourselves in this historical visitation. In each room, he explained and used the traces to guess the use in the past life.

Influenced by Covid, many people's work has shifted from the original offline to online. Through the continuous innovation of technology, to achieve people can WFH. Compared with the traditional office work, people may have less communication, including the use of synchronous communication such as telephone, video, etc., but increased the use of asynchronous communication such as email. However, the data shows that people's collaboration has been decreasing after a long period of WFH, and the interaction between different teams is decreasing which is not good for the long-term development of the company. And WFH increases the working hours of employees because of the use of more asynchronous communication. And WFH does not really have a big impact on the work of backend software developers, while it has a big impact on the work of individual contributors, managers i.e. their direct and other work that depends on instant messaging.(https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-021-01196-4?#Sec2)
So how the working model will evolve in the future is what we need to explore. Many people's jobs have been converted to permanent online, but this is not very friendly to new staff joining. They will not have more opportunities to interact with people.

People engage in information behavior when they have a need for it. This semester's course has allowed for a systematic understanding of human information behavior. Also by reading the weekly related literature, one could understand more about the different states of people in different occupations and generations when they engage in information seeking. Moreover, some literature will describe groups that are not accessible in daily life, such as urban explorers, etc. This class gives us more opportunities to learn about groups that are not common but exist in our daily lives.

Everyone became Seminar Leader once, which allowed us to strengthen our understanding of the literature and our ability to generalize, while helping us to practice our leading skills. And when we are Tech Angels, it helped us to collaborate as a team and help everyone to solve technical problems together.

When we had Guest Speakers, it helped us to enhance our understanding of the content of the article more deeply. Usually Guest Speakers are people who have been working in the professional field for many years, and these classes gave us the opportunity to talk with professional lecturers and deepen our understanding of our respective research fields.

This class is more about interacting with people and being able to listen to each person's understanding of the article in relation to their own experience. It was possible to interact with people and the instructor was friendly and always eager to help us with difficulties in our reports or daily study tasks.
