There is good potential for reasonably-sized research opportunities with Yorkshire Museum collections which might lead to exhibitions over medium-long term:

Archaeology, by period

- The North in the Iron Age

- Norman Conquest and its impact across Northern England

- Anglian/Anglo-Saxon period, particularly C6-8th

There are loads of potential for stand-alone dissertation/MA thesis type projects within the collection - focused on small assemblages or key objects in the archaeology collections. Many of these would be recent acquisitions so won't have ever been written up formally. Some ideas:

- Towton Iron Age Torcs

- Saint Mary's Abbey Corpus Christi

- 2 x Late Roman siliquae coin hoards

- Heslington Roman hoard

- Various medieval pilgrim badges

and many more besides

YMT have staff who have taught formally and informally in the past. We bring expertise in specific collections but also practical museum practice.

We can host groups from University at any of our sites and share collections with you - although there will be a cost for this

I work in the faculty for social sciences and I’m interested in whether there is room to collaborate to find visual ‘ways in’ to social issues we have research strengths in across the university. Perhaps we could collaborate by inviting social policy experts in the faculty to reflect on artworks and objects in the collection, so for example a housing policy expert talking about a Lowry. We could do this as a collaboration on Instagram or other social channels.

Need to be made more available the studentship funded opportunities for research collections and sensory engagement in museums for people who are YMT staff and also students at the department of Archaeology at the University of York. If you are part of both institutions this is the perfect match. Again, those vacancies need to be made available more widely, more projects to be built. These partnerships are extremely important and valuable, as it builds knowledge and understanding of the collections and how audiences experience museums.

Long lead times on planning will allow us to apply for further funding from charitable trusts, national bodies and local corporate organisations where conversations, applications, and outcomes can take time. We were successful in applying for NHLF funding for the Star Carr exhibition because we knew a year in advance of the project beginning that we needed additional money. Funders really value organisations working together so more collaboration will be welcome and at UoY we have a dedicated fundraising team who are here to help!

Enabling broad engagement

As discussed, starting from looking at YMT's scope from various angles e.g. collections, content themes, audiences, strategic goals, and using this to reach out across disciplines to spark ideas and contacts. This, plus mapping collaborations already undertaken, feels like a potential short-term role to be funded, with a view to then identifying new fundable, strategic and longer-term opportunities (as well as quick deliverables). Learning from the existing CDP centres in national museums seems like a valid starting point.

Student tickets at YMT

I wonder whether there might be scope to negotiate annual tickets for students to YMT venues - either on an individual or departmental basis? I know that our students in Archaeology would love to spend more time in YMT exhibitions and if organised at the departmental level, would also open up new opportunities for teaching. It might also be possible to arrange for students to be part of focus groups etc. in return for a discounted annual ticket?
