Independent measures design
laboratory experiment

2 weeks until 5 months each kitten spent 5 hours a day in a vertical lines dustbin or a horizontal lined dust bin. Besides for these 5 hours a day the kittens were kept in complete darkness.
The kittens saw no corners or edges and were wearing a cone on there head, all to reduce any extraneous variables.
At 5 months, the kittens were placed in a normal homely environment, with tables and chairs. The kitten's behaviour was then observed in relation to a number of aspects. These included looking at their response to a fast moving object approaching them, jumping off tables and moving physical, vertical or horizontal lines to measure their response to it

After observation of the cats for two hours, the experimenters concluded that they saw, because of their visual development, the cats could not see edges as clearly, as they appeared scared when they got close to the edge of the table.
The cats also did'nt not respond to a fast moving object approaching their faces which would startle a cat with normal visual development.
The cat kept in a visual condition of horizontal lines could only respond to the moving horizontal line going up and down whereas the cat with the vertical lines condition could only respond to the vertical line moving from side to side.
These deficiencies were soon restored after 10 hours of normal visual experience of light. The kittens could then jump safely from the table to the floor .

Changes are not the consequence of degeneration. There was no evidence to suggest that areas of the cortex were 'silent' or that areas of cortical cells were missing.

The differences between the differently reared kittens suggest that neurons change their preferred orientation according to stimulation they receive. matching the ability of the brain to respond to the features in it's visual input.
