It is when our indigenous ancestors lived in the Philippines prior to the arrival of our first colonizers. Arts were only used for ritual or everyday purposes at the time. As local communities grew, art began to evolve beyond mere craft, such as stone weapons or jewelry, to include decorative elements, meaning, and context. When it comes to literature it can be both written and spoken. The earliest forms of written literature are cave drawings and writings, and the earliest forms of oral literature are rituals, chants, and storytelling. When it comes to Agriculture, Sculpture, paintings, and pottery were the most well-known forms of visual arts during the Pre-Colonial Period, as evidenced by tattoos from the pintados in Panay, the Bulul, a wooden sculpture of the rice God of Ifugaos, and the Manunggul burial jar discovered in Palawan.

References: https://www.preceden.com/timelines/667670-history-of-philippine-art

The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras are an outstanding example of an evolved, living cultural landscape that can be traced back to pre-colonial times in the Philippines. The terraces are in remote areas of the Philippine Cordillera mountain range on the northern island of Luzon in the Philippine archipelago. While the historic terraces cover a large area, the inscribed property is made up of five clusters of the most intact and impressive terraces in four municipalities. They are all descended from the Ifugao ethnic group, a minority group that has lived in these mountains for thousands of years.
The Ifugao Rice Terraces represent the perfect synthesis of the physical, sociocultural, economic, religious, and political environments. It is, indeed, a living cultural landscape of unrivaled beauty. The Ifugao Rice Terraces are a priceless contribution to humanity made by Philippine ancestors. The Ifugao Rice Terraces, built 2000 years ago and passed down from generation to generation, are an enduring example of an ancient civilization that overcame various challenges and setbacks posed by modernization.

References: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/722/

When the Spaniards arrived in the Philippines in 1521, they used art to spread the Catholic faith by creating beautiful images. With communication a problem, the friars used images to explain Catholic concepts and to tell stories about Christ's life and passion. When it comes to Literature, Baybayin from Mindoro was one of the only preserved traditional Filipino writings, and the Doctrina Christiana (the teachings of Christ) was another When it comes to Visual Arts, it is likely that the majority of the artworks express a hidden desire for rebellion against Spain, such as the Basi Revolt, a series of 14 paintings by Esteban Villanueva; the Carta Hydrograpica y Chorographica de Ias Yslas Filipinas, the first scientific map of the Philippines by Francisco Suarez and Nicolas deal Cruz Bagay; the Spolarium of Juan Luna, which won the Gold Medal in Spain; and the. Furthermore, the Plaza Complex was introduced in architecture, and churches were built in the cruciform style.
following the shape of the Latin Cross; churches are baroque in design but Filipino design has been incorporated; and houses are known as Bahay na Bato/Bahay na Tisa and when it comes to Sculpture, Santos are made of ivory or wood; relleves are known to be the facade of churches; and the Carroza or plateria that is a pedestal used in religious Catholic procession where an image is loaded.

Citations: https://www.preceden.com/timelines/667670-history-of-philippine-art
