Catherine Hettinger, a chemical engineer by training, was initially credited by some news stories as having been the inventor of the fidget spinner, including by media outlets such as The Guardian,The New York Times,and the New York Post. Hettinger filed a patent application for a "spinning toy" in 1993 and a patent was issued, but Hettinger allowed the patent to lapse in 2005 after she could not find a commercial partner. A May 2017 Bloomberg News article showed that Hettinger was not the inventor of the fidget spinner, and Hettinger agreed.

In an interview appearing on May 4, 2017 on NPR, Scott McCoskery described how he invented a metal spinning device in 2014 to cope with his own fidgeting in IT meetings and conference calls. In response to requests from an online community, he began selling the device he called the Torqbar online.

The toy has been promoted as helping people who have trouble focusing or those who fidget to relieve nervous energy, anxiety, or psychological stress. There are claims that a fidget spinner can help calm down people who have anxiety and other neurological disorders like ADHD and autism. However, as of May 2017, there is no scientific evidence that they are effective as a treatment for ADHD.

3.Getting better input: Using fidget toy children are able to get sensory input, which otherwise they would have missed. Just like play therapy these activities are as important as it help the children to process events and activities.

4.Relieve the office people: When getting stressed, it’s better to use fidget spinner than biting down whole nails or consciously disturbing your office colleagues with continuous clicking of a pen.

1.Not every child is same: It is not mandatory that every child requires the same sought of sensory input to become successful. There are many children who have their own caliber and thus can do well in life without the need of this spinner. For such children these things become a source of distraction or just a toy to waste their important time.

2.Ban in school: Because of becoming an intense source of distraction these toys are gradually being banned by the school authorities. Their noise and soothing visualization lead to disturbance in the classroom premises among the children. Also, this has become a prime reason for the incomplete assignment and homework.

3. All in moderation: Similar to the other latest fads, when not used properly, they do not function in the same manner. When children over uses the fidget or do not use it for the intended purpose, it just becomes the latest and greatest toy.
