In Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner, the character development of Amir and his relationship with Hassan demonstrate that while his shame (that came from a place of selfishness and jealousy) brought out the worst in him, his guilt led him to think about how his actions affected others and gave him a chance at redemption.

(A person's guilt can cause them to take accountability for their actions. A person's shame only makes them feel sorry for themselves.)

I am trying to introduce the focus on the difference between shame and guilt in The Kite Runner, but I don't want my thesis to be too complicated or lengthy. What do you guys suggest?

Ultimately, the characters' childhoods and growth illustrates that the definition of morals in childhood determines whether history will or will not repeat itself.

I'd really appreciate any advice you guys have on how I could condense this into 1 sentence.
