I think that it's very important to start by saying that I've never had students that were over 13 years old. I got 3rd year, it was a group of 13 students, of ages between 15 and 16 years old. I was really nervous and I must say I didn't think I would like it. Just thinking about the fact that I had to deliver 6 lessons would freak me out but I managed to stay as calm as possible and go through with it, for which I'm proud of.

I was very nervous. I went to the coordinator of English's office and she told me to follow her, that she was going to introduce me to the teacher in charge. It was a very pleasant surprise for me to see the teacher because she had been my teacher in 3rd year (that would be around 2009). She greeted me with joy and told me that she would help me with everything I needed. On our way to the classroom she told me a little bit about the group, that they complain but they work. Since it was only an observation, I wasn't feeling very anxious. I entered the classroom and it was funny to see that almost every student was taller than me. They greeted me, 5 minutes went by and they forgot I was there. One thing I noticed was that Marina, the teacher, would speak an awful lot of spanish to them and wouldn't pressure or encourage them to speak English. There, I saw a challenge.

On the second day, I was a little bit more nervous, not by being there, but to know that I will have to fill the space Marina was filling at that moment, they started the day complaining, being noisy and not paying any attention to what Marina had to say. She proceeded to "poner un grito en el cielo" as we would say and they all got quieter and started working. That's the thing with teenagers, they know teachers are employees and can't really "punish" them so they act out. I understand it because, even though I was in their place 9 years ago, I still get it.
So as the class went by, I started to think about all the things I could do with them to catch their attention and not "lose" them.
I was afraid that speaking English the whole class will be a difficulty for them and for me as well, but I wouldn't know until the first class.

I woke up at 6:30am. My stomach was a mess, I couldn't stop thinking all the scenarios where I could fail and how things could go horribly wrong. I think that first impressions are the most important and they are very delicate at the same time. Since they are teenagers, you must make them respect you from the very beginning. If you don't acomplish that or if you lose it along the way, lessons will be impossible to carry through.
I started the class (they were in the middle of Unit 6) and they followed through every single activity.
There was one student, Sofia, that would question everything and would speak to every single student in the classroom, but I think I managed her very well, since everything was done at the end.
The lessons are 1:20hs long and this one went by very fast. I left the school feeling very relieved.

I was very excited because we were going to watch an episode of Black Mirror called "white bear". Black Mirror, for those who don't know, is a british TV show that shows us how technology has changed (and ruined) various aspects (if not all) of our lives and the world itself. Every episode has a diferent story, context and reality but they all show us how what we're doing now could lead us to in a very near future. It's very interesting and it refers to relevant topics that society is and will go through. I thought it was very appropriate, even though it can be a little raw, since this episode shows various crimes (which is what the Unit is about) such as kidnapping, murder, stalking and punishments as well. We worked half of the class, presenting the new Unit and revising a little bit of vocabulary (which they knew a lot of already, I'm guessing because of movies and TV shows). The second half of the class, we went to the video room and watched the first 30 minutes of the episode. I paused where the plot twist began. They complained and told me to leave it because they wanted to know what was going to happen but I told them to reflect on it and try to guess for next class, what was going to happen.

This class ran very smoothly, we discussed about punishment and crime, students were really involved in the work I gave them. They had to make a news article of a journal. They had to work in pairs and each group would pick a folded piece of paper that had a crime written on it ex. "murder", "shoplifting", etc. They had to write a news article for a made up Journal. They really liked the activity and even draw the images. They used the dictionaries, asked me about vocabulary and how to say certain expressions. It was a lovely class and I was very sad when it ended.

We finished watching the episode, they were shocked by what happened on the episode and it was really hard to make them stop talking about it to continue with the lesson. I enjoyed watching them discussing it in a very informal friend to friend scenario since that was the whole point; to make them think about the things that happened, our reality, the world and technology. Afterwards, I gave them a series of activities related to this episode, crime and punishments.

I made them work in groups of three, in pairs and individually as well. I think that is important that they know how to work with others as well as on their own, later in life they will see that they will have to work with people that they might not like very much or are not friends with but they must get things done.

I absolutely adored teaching high school students. They were wonderful with me, paid attention, were very participative and wouldn't complain about anything. It was interesting to listen to their ideas, thoughts and feelings towards different topics and scenarios. I didn't know at first how was I going to feel and how it was going to go since I never teached students that age. I can say now, that I absolutely adored every minute with them. They were mature enough to discuss real-life relevant topics which was very enriching for me as a person and as a future teacher.
Now my practices are over and I feel a little bit sad since it was such a rollercoaster, full of different emotions! I'm very positive that this is what I want to do with my life. I love teaching with all my heart.
