This module introduced me to many important aspects of University study and digital learning such researching and collaborating online. In particular, I remember asking a mentor in the discussion task about essays and where to start and was given a great answer about starting early, using the reading lists and visiting your tutor. I want to be able to use my experience to offer insights like these as well as give confidence to first year students at what can be a daunting time. I was a mentor on the module last year and enjoyed guiding students through the tasks, using my existing knowledge of the university’s digital platforms. The highlight was the blackboard collaborate session I hosted, surrounding the soft drink sugar tax. It was great to discuss a subject specific topic in a supportive, collaborative environment. Many students were very engaged in the session, contributing remotely via chat function, whiteboard drawings and even microphone. This year I would like to continue to help first year students develop their digital skills and enhance their online learning experience.
