Then they start to go back when they see smoke at the church then they turn around to hear a woman yelling at the church that the children were still in there so jonny and pony boy ran in and saved them. They just got all of their supplies and Johny had gotten food, matches, and a copy of gone with the wind. The last thing he got was bleach. He decided that him and Pony boy needed to cut and bleach their hair to disguise themselves. They were both very stressed about what happened to the boy that was killed. Johny and Pony boy both cried and both had a nervous breakdown. The whole week went by really slow, they spent all of their time playing poker and reading gone with the wind. 
Dally comes to see Johny and Pony Boy, and to go get some food. Pony Boy and Johny were very excited to see Johny and to find out how the "gang" is. When the guys take the girls home, they decide they can't really hang out or date. Since the guys are Greasers and the girls are Socs, it could ruin the girls reputation. After they walked back to the Greasers house to get their car, Randy and Bob tell the girls if they can't take them home instead, they will jump the Greasers. Then a girl named Sherry Valence threw her coke at Dally then he smiled as he wiped the coke off of his face and tried to flirt some more when Jonny did something he had never done witch was stand up against Dally his idol. When he told him to stop Dally calmed down and went away. Soda wasn't hurt too bad, he only had a few bruises and cuts. Then Darry his older brother comes to find him on the side of the road beaten up, all of his gang members help him and too get back home. 

Then Pony starts to narrate about all of his gang members witch include Darry (oldest brother), Sodapop (older brother),Two- bit (oldest gang member),Dally (Thief), and Jonny (gangs pet).

Chapter one is a very important chapter in the book because it explains the character and some of the differences between the Greasers and the Socs. After all of the reporters came the hospital was very quiet and a doctor came up to tell them what had happened dally and Jonny who was in critical condition then they all went home then fell asleep quickly. The next day pony woke up and made breakfast when Two-Bit and Steve came in swinging pony around holding on to him tight. When they all settled down they started to talk about what had happened and what was wrong with Jonny and Dally. The gang came to the hospital to see Johny before the rumble that night. While the gang was there Johny asked for them to bring him some grease and a copy of  Gone with the wind. Right before the gang left, Johny's mom came to visit him but Johny refused to see her.

Pony boy  ended out talking to Cherry that night. He wanted to figure out why Cherry is a spy for the greasers but are still hanging out with all the socs. She wanted him to know that he was a great guy and she only wanted to help. When they were getting dressed and greased up for the big rumble, they were having a pep talk with each other. Pony boy asked soda pop and Darry, but soda pop answered and said fighting is like a contest, to show off your muscles, etc. Then they all left doing flips and summersaults and chanted that they were greasers the whole way to the rumble. When he then asked two-bit if he liked fighting, he answered and said that everyone fights. Tim Shepards group was there and thats when pony boy figured out why the Shepards and the greasers were different. Tim shepards group had a leader and they didn't. This time the rumble had a new rule about no weapons so many people were nervous. The greasers were not nervous because they never use them and have been trained not to. Pony boy was the youngest one there so Darry was still nervous about pony boy being in the rumble. When the Socs showed up there, pony boy counted 22 socs, but figured they could still beat them. The rumble was rough that night but the greasers won! After the rumble they went to go see Johny in the hospital and on the way there they were stopped by a police man but said they were going to the hospital. When they got there the Doctor told them that Johny was about to die. When Pony boy went to go talk to Johny, Johny told him to stay gold. When he gets in the man realizes that pony is bleeding and tells him about it then takes him home. When he gets home he tells about how Jonny died and how he told him to stay gold and how Dally had finally broke. They tried to calm pony down but there was a call from dally he had robbed a grocery store . They met him at the open lot where the cops also were they pulled guns and so did he so they shot and killed him. Right after pony passed out then woke up in the hospital to his 2 brothers . After Johny died, Pony has not been acting right, he's been kind of lazy and isn't paying attention to most things. His English teacher talks to him after school about his grades. Right now Pony boy has an F, but can get a C, if he has a good semester topic. At his lunch hour he went to the grocery store and ran into some socs. They asked Pony if he was the one that killed Bob. Pony broke his Pepsi bottle and threatned the socs with it. Two bit told him to not be tough, because thats not who Pony is.
 Soda ran away because he was tired of being stuck in the middle of things with Darry and Pony. Pony started to cry but Darry and Pony agreed not to fight anymore. When Pony got home he decided to read a book. He decided to read Gone with the wind, when he opened the book he found a letter from Johny.Right after that he picked up a pen and started writing his theme for his paper.
