Als kurze Information im Vorhinein, hier ein Überblick zum Erasmus+ Programm an unserer Schule.

Neben den Erasmus+ Basisprinzipien (Inklusion und Diversität, Nachhaltigkeit und Verantwortungsbewusstsein, Digitale Bildung und aktive Teilnahme am Erasmus Netzwerk) haben wir als Schule folgende Ziele definiert:

- Kulturaustausch im europäischen Kontext

- Erhöhung der Fremdsprachenkompetenzen

- Erweiterung der digitalen Kompetenzen

- Stärkung der Zukunftskompetenzen (Kollaboration, Kommunikation, Kreativität und Kritisches Denken)

1 Füllt das Datenblatt zu den "Learning outcomes" einzeln aus (im Reiter Dokumente zu finden). Nehmt euch Zeit und überlegt euch wirklich, was ihr euch von eurem Auslandsaufenthalt erwartet und was ihr aus der Erfahrung fürs spätere Leben mitnehmen wollt. Ladet das Dokument mit eurem Namen wieder in der dafür vorhergesehenen Spalte hoch.

2 Schreibt 14tägig einen Blogbeitrag, in dem ihr die Höhepunkte, Lernerfahrungen und Begegnungen niederschreibt. Ihr könnt das gerne auch als Podcast / Videoprojekt gestalten. Ein Teil eurer Beiträge werden auf der Homepage des BG Rein veröffentlicht - ihr könnt das als Plattform nutzen, um eure Klassenkollegen und eure Familie am Laufenden zu halten. Überlegt euch im Vorhinein, in welcher Form ihr eure Beiträge gestalten wollt und versucht dann, diese auch beizubehalten (Englisch oder Deutsch? Ich-Erzähler oder aus einer anderen Perspektive? Als Reisetagebuch oder als Abenteuergeschichte?). Wichtig ist, dass ihr hier auch Bilder postet (bitte einzelne, keine zusammengebastelten Collagen)!

3 Am Ende eures Aufenthalts füllt ihr bitte das Dokument "Evaluation and Reflection" aus (im Reiter Dokumente zu finden). Schaut euch davor nochmal eure definierten Learning outcomes an und formuliert, was ihr erreicht habt, was nicht und warum. Ladet das Dokument in eurer Spalte mit eurem Namen hoch.

4 Dissemination: Ihr könnt euch 60 Euro dazuverdienen, indem ihr eure Erfahrungen an einer Schule präsentiert. Ihr dürft das zu zweit machen, allerdings werden pro Jahr nur zwei an einer Schule dann mit dem Geld entlohnt. Falls ihr daran Interesse habt, bitte melden.

It’s been over a week since I arrived in Helsinki and I can still remember how I couldn’t stop smiling at the airport. It was the moment I realised there’s no going back now, but in a good way.

The first ten days passed by so fast and at the same time I did so many things. I already saw the orthodox cathedral, Kaivopuisto, the stone church, Oodi, the protestant cathedral and much more. Next week we also want to visit some museums. I need to admit, the first time I was in the city centre I was a little bit disappointed because I imagined Helsinki differently. But then I started to see the beauty of the city and noticed all the nice places.

I also love my host family so much! My host parents are so nice and their food is amazing! Every single day I’m stunned by the variety and knowledge there is in this household. Of course, it was hard at first to get used to living somewhere else, but I have the feeling that I’m getting more and more comfortable in the host family.

The school and school system are quite different than in Austria. Oulunkylän Yhteiskoulu, that’s the name of the school (I didn’t even need to look it up again), is big, but clearly structured and I got a hang of it easily. The lunch in school is alright. The food is nothing exciting or special and it tasted pretty good. My daily highlight is secretly the bread: OYK makes fresh bread every day and if you’re lucky it’s still warm! I love it!
Since there’s the exam week now, I don’t have a lot of lessons and it was a little complicated, but I figured it out.

In my free time, when I’m not in school or exploring the city, I go running (it’s freezing) and the best thing is that I can do archery here. Minna, my host mum, found an archery club for me and I train there two times per week. Let’s see if I can also go to the SJAL national camp…

Lastly, it snowed! I was excited like a little child when it started snowing. Now walking through the forest feels like a world inside a snow globe. It’s so magical! But I need to say that the snow is wonderful, but there’s also the coldness and the freezing wind. As much as I love winter, I’m as excited for spring as all the finns.

A third of my exchange is over. But two thirds are still waiting for me!
The past weeks were amazing, especially Eastern!
I got to meet Elina‘s family, ate a lot of delicious food (my favourite is Mämmi) and the weather got a lot nicer. At the moment we have ten degrees, that’s 20 degrees difference to when I came here! You can also see the first flowers blooming.
Going to school became less exciting, it just feels normal now. I also have my own timetable and because of that it’s a lot less confusing.

I’ve been a few more times in the centre and visited some museums (Kiasma and Amos Rex). I need to say that the city, my host family and everything starts to feel more and more like a home.

The others arrived! Before they came it had been pretty relaxed and quiet, but now we have many plans and ideas, let’s see if we can fit them all into our calendars.

At the beginning of last week, we were able to see the musical the students of OYK created. Honestly, I was stunned even though I didn’t understand anything. It was amazing!

Last week I went to the centre with Henri, Rebecca, Marlene and Lia (a girl from Berlin) and I was able to show them around a little bit. Then on Saturday we all (this time we were ten) took a ferry to Suomenlinna! It was amazing, I wanted to go there for so long. We had a little picnic and explored the island. What I didn’t know before was that there is a whole tunnel system! I haven’t seen everything yet, so I definitely need to go again!

On Sunday, my host parents took me to Porvoo. It’s an old and small town about 30min from Helsinki. There are a lot of small cafés, restaurants and shops and it’s so nice to wander through the old parts of the town, especially on a sunny day.

My host parents’ friends went together with us, they are from Spain and Italy and had two adorable children. The dad of the family likes fishing and then he showed me how to do it. I love to try new things and it was so much fun, but we didn’t catch anything.

I’m so excited to see what comes in the next few weeks…

Mittagessen in der Schule, Salat ohne Dressing, Sushi-Buffets in Supermärkten, bunte Holzhäuser und Ziegelsteinhäuser.

Das sind nur ein paar der Unterschiede, die ich in meinen ersten 9 Tagen in Finnland bemerkt habe. Ich hatte schon so viele Erlebnisse, dass ich 50 Seiten meines Reisetagebuches schon beschrieben habe. Und zu diesen Erlebnissen zählen nicht nur spannende Ausflüge, wie Suomenlinna oder die Innenstadt (obwohl wir dort auch schon waren), sondern auch einfache Dinge, wie Essen mit der Gastfamilie und in Supermärkten einkaufen gehen.

Ich war schon 4 Mal in der Innenstadt und habe auch schon Touristenattraktionen wie den Helsinki Dom, die orthodoxe Kirche und den Hafen gesehen.

Einer meiner liebsten Ausflüge war Suomenlinna. Das ist eine Insel, die man mit einer 20 Minuten langen Fährenfahrt erreichen kann. Dort war ich mit 9 anderen Austauschschülern und Hosts. Auf der Insel hatten wir ein Picknick und dann sind wir herumspaziert und haben die Insel erkundet. Wir sind durch alte Tunnel gegangen und haben die Ruinen bewundert, aber am schönsten fand ich die Küste.

Auch in der Schule habe ich schon viel erlebt. Das Schulessen, welches wir jeden Tag bekommen, ist sehr gut und oft gibt es frisch gebackenes Brot, das manchmal noch warm ist! Außerdem ist es schön mit meinen Freunden beim Essen zu reden, weil wir oft nicht in den gleichen Fächern sind. Letzte Woche haben wir auch das Schulmusical gesehen, was sehr beeindruckend war.

In unseren Freistunden sitzen wir entweder auf Sofas in den Gängen oder im Leseraum, indem es viele Tische und sogar 2 Silent Cubes gibt.

Meine Gastfamilie ist sehr nett und ich habe mich schnell eingelebt. Sie erzählen oft über Finnland und Helsinki, was ich sehr interessant finde. Mit ihnen habe ich schon typische finnische Gerichte wie Mämmi, Brotkäse und Zimtschnecken ausprobiert.
Zum Abschluss sind noch ein paar Ausschnitte aus meinem Reisetagebuch.

Spazieren gehen ist toll.

Wir haben mit einer Schere, die kleiner ist als meine Hand, 10 cm von ihren Haaren abgeschnitten.

Ich dachte immer, ich hasse Lakritz, aber dann habe ich es sehr oft gegessen und jetzt mag ich es.

Ich freue mich so, dass ich hier bin.

If someone told me that I would go to an archery camp in Finland, I would’ve been sure they’re crazy but turns out they would’ve been right.
I am training twice a week with a club in Helsinki and when they asked me if I wanted to come to their camp, I agreed.
This weekend I was in the Olympic training centre in Kuortane, about 4 hours to the north from Helsinki. It was a little bit scary at first, I drove there with a complete stranger and didn’t know what to expect. Thankfully, everyone was really nice and some people explained how everything works.
The whole trip was a challenge, I barely knew anyone before, but in the end, it was a huge success and so much fun! I think it really made me grow as a person.
Right after I came back the Vappu celebrations started. I met up with the other exchange students and we went to the statue, even though we couldn't really see anything, since it was stuffed with people. After that we went to another place and it was freezing. That’s why I was a little bit sick the following days.
On May 1st we had the Vappu picknick and again: amazing but crowded. I ate some Tippaleipä, Munkis and drank Sima, which are typical for Vappu.
That wasn’t everything, on Tuesday I went to the national library with the other Austrians and Germans. The building was incredible and all the books! I could’ve stayed there all day long, but eventually we left and went to Oodi, where we ate some Donuts and read, did some school stuff or wrote. It was so funny when we were trying to be quiet and laugh at the same time. I believe we spent the whole afternoon until 8 o’clock in the centre.
Yesterday we went as an even bigger group (Marlene, Lilja, Uuno, Rebecca, Henri, Riikka, Veera, Jenni, Martina, Johanna and me) to Ateneum, an art museum. After that Rebecca and I searched for a specific bookstore and it was closed, but then we went to Oodi once again and got a library card for us! I should’ve gotten one earlier, but I was always too lazy…
Today I’m going on a cruise ship to Stockholm with my host family and I’m so excited!

Jetzt bin ich schon seit einem Monat in Helsinki und die Zeit ist verflogen. Langsam wird es Sommer. Jedes Mal, wenn ich in die Wetterapp schaue, stelle ich fest, dass das Wetter in Helsinki besser ist als in Graz.

Seit meinem letzten Eintrag habe ich viel erlebt. Wir haben Vappu gefeiert und waren in der Innenstadt, wo alle Studenten Overalls trugen und alle Absolventen Kappen aufhatten. Am 31. April wurde einer Statue eine Kappe aufgesetzt und am 1. Mai hatten wir ein traditionelles Vappu Picknick mit Munkki und Sima.

Außerdem habe ich im letzten Monat die Nationalbibliothek, die Nationalgalerie, ein Katzencafé, das Olympiastadion und den Olympiaturm gesehen. Ein weiteres Highlight war unser 1-Tages-Ausflug nach Tallin. Auf der Fähre hatten wir ein köstliches Frühstück und dann sind wir den ganzen Tag durch die Innenstadt spaziert. Das Wetter war fantastisch und es war so sommerlich.

Dieses Wochenende haben wir den Songcontest geschaut, bei dem Finnland leider nicht gewonnen hat. Aber als wir um 3 Uhr heimgekommen sind war es noch immer hell. Das war so cool.

Es ist so schön, meine Gastfamilie immer besser kennenzulernen und eine Routine zu finden.

Ich freue mich schon sehr auf alle zukünftigen Ausflüge, die wir schon geplant haben.

Hier sind wieder ein paar Ausschnitte aus meinem Tagebuch.

Überall war grün. Es wäre nicht überraschend gewesen, zu erfahren, dass die Ampeln grün sind, um Kärijää support zu zeigen.

Ich dachte: Ich werde nie wieder 15 Jahre alt sein und mir in einem Park in Helsinki die Haare zu ABBA-Musik schneiden lassen.

Marlene hat mir in einem Fast Food Restaurant die Haare mit einem Lockenstab gelockt.

Ich habe eine wirklich großartige Zeit hier.

Bisher war meine Zeit in Helsinki wunderbar und ist wie im Flug vergangen. Die letzten 2 Wochen im April sind an mir vorbeigezogen, ich war total geflasht von allem und habe so viele tolle Sachen erlebt. Ich ging das erste Mal in die Schule, ich fand neue Freunde aus Deutschland, Spanien, Canada, den USA, Thailand, Japan und natürlich Finnland :) .

Das Schulleben hier ist sehr entspannt und effektiv – einfach eine gute Lernatmosphäre! Und ein gutes gesundes Mittagessen gibt es auch. Eines meiner absoluten Highlights war, dass ich Nordlichter sehen durfte – es war so schön, ich war zu Tränen gerührt.

Ich habe eine sehr liebe Familie, die mich sofort ins Herz geschlossen hat, so wie ich sie.

Jeden Tag hatten wir ein Programm geplant um, so viel wie möglich von der Stadt zu sehen. Aber was war das Erste, das wir im Mai erlebt haben? Natürlich Vappuu! Das ist eine sehr wichtige Feierlichkeit in Finnland und wird am 30. April und 1. Mai gefeiert, und wir waren live dabei: 70 000 Leute auf der Straße, alle mit den typischen weißen Hüten auf dem Kopf (diese Hüte erhält man beim Abschluss aus der High School), bunte Luftballons und Live Music! Es war megaaa cool! Wir besichtigten auch die National Bibliothek, Helsinki Cathedral und einige Kunstmuseen… Außerdem fuhren wir mit der Fähre nach Estland und verbrachten einen ganzen Tag in Talinn. Talinn ist eine sehr süße Stadt, die mich sehr an Graz erinnert hat.

Als wir im April in Finnland ankamen, war es ziemlich kalt, meistens so um die 7 Grad. Doch vor knapp 10 Tagen fand hier die „Grüne Explosion“ statt. Auf einmal hatten alle Baume Blätter und es wurde wärmer. Es ist schwer zu beschreiben, aber es riecht irgendwie nach Sommer. Es hat nun fast jeden Tag um die 22 Grad und es ist meist wolkenlos, wir haben echt ein Glück mit dem Wetter! Wir verbringen die meiste Zeit draußen, egal ob in der Schule oder am Nachmittag, es ist wirklich toll! Für heute ist schon der nächste Ausflug geplant, bis bald!

Stockholm was amazing! Secretly, I prefer it over Helsinki, but don’t let any Finn know that. We went there at night with a cruise ship, spent the day there and then came back the next morning. Of course, I couldn’t see a lot of the city, but I got my first impression and saw the main sights. Elina and I also went to the ABBA museum, so what could you want more?
The next days I spent a lot of time with the other exchange students, Martina sadly went back to Spain and Lia also left. But before that we still had a lot of fun. We went on top of the Olympic tower, wanted to see a Marimekko fashion show (we missed it), bought friendship bracelets, watched the sunset, saw the ESC and cut mine and Rebecca’s hair. Of course, we also visited the Fazer factory and tasted a lot of chocolate.
On the 18th my host parents took me to Tallinn, where we met with my family. It was amazing seeing them again, but at the same time, it made me sad because it means that I need to leave Finland soon. I stayed one night with my family in Estonia and then we went back to Finland together. Tallinn is such a beautiful city! Especially the old town is stunning, but I also liked the newer arts district! In Helsinki, I showed my parents around and we had dinner with my sister’s host families and mine as well. We also went to Suomenlinna and Seurasaari, an outdoor museum with old buildings from all around Finland.
When they left, I realised that I have less than two weeks left. Soon my exchange will be come to an end, but I already collected so many memories.

Ein Monat in Helsinki

Ich muss sagen, dass es bisher eine wirklich coole Zeit hier war. Uuno und
ich verstehen uns wirklich gut, und auch seine Familie sind äußerst entspannte
Menschen und haben mich gut aufgenommen. In der ersten Woche meines Aufenthalts
war Uuno in Berlin. Es war ein bisschen schwierig, mich ohne ihn
zurechtzufinden, aber ich habe mich schnell mit der Hilfe von Uunos Familie
eingelebt. Sie haben mir geholfen, mich in der Stadt zurechtzufinden, und haben
für mich am Anfang den Touristenführer gespielt. Außerdem haben sie mir in der
Wohnung, die eine wirklich ideale Lage hat, das größte Zimmer gegeben, wo ich
das Chaos zumindest bis jetzt noch im Zaun halten konnte. Dafür musste Uuno mit
seinem Bruder in ein Zimmer ziehen, weshalb ich noch immer leichte
Schuldgefühle habe, aber wurscht. Der Bruder hat mir dann auch am ersten Tag
erklärt wo ich die Räume finde und wie sie angeordnet sind.

Das finnische Bildungssystem

Durch diese Hilfe (und auch der von Anja) habe ich mich in der Schule relativ schnell zurechtgefunden. Zwar empfinde ich es als etwas unnötig für wirklich jede Stunde die Klasse zu wechseln, aber dass man seine eigene Kurse wählen darf finde ich sehr entspannt. In der Schule gibt es auch ein gratis „Mittagessen“ (um 11). Die Idee finde ich ja ganz brauchbar aber zum Essen.

Die finnische Küche - ein kulinarisches Abenteuer der besonderen Art

Nun da alle Einträge bis jetzt sehr positiv sind fand ich es langsam angebracht auch ein bisschen Kritik einzubringen. Also, die finnische Küche, ein wahrer Genuss für alle, die ihre Geschmacksknospen auf eine harte Probe stellen möchten. Kommen wir am Anfang zu ihrem exorbitanten Konsum von Milch bei dem es mich wundert, dass sie nicht schon längst zum Hinduismus konvertiert sind und die Kuh als heiliges Tier ansehen. Aber nun zu einer anderen Besonderheit: "Salmiakki". Eine Köstlichkeit für alle, die den Geschmack von Ammoniak in ihrem Mund lieben. Ja, Sie haben richtig gehört. Finnland hat es geschafft, das Lieblingsaroma von Reinigungsmitteln in ein Naschwerk zu verwandeln. Ein wahrer Gaumenschmaus, den man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte. Aber was verzeiht man einem nicht alles, wenn man schön aussieht und zum Glück für die Finnen tut Finnland das.

Stadt und Natur

Helsinki ist eine sehr schöne Stadt. Wir haben schon viele interessante Orte besucht, wie den Senatsplatz, den Dom und die berühmte Festungsinsel Suomenlinna. Aber das für mich am beeindruckendsten an Helsinki sind die vielen Grünflächen in der Stadt, die es dort um ein Vielfaches Gemütlicher machen. Und auch außerhalb von Helsinki sind die Seen und Wälder sehr ansehnlich, aber ich freue mich auch mal wieder einen Berg zu sehen. An meinem ersten Tag (da war Uuno noch da) sind wir auf den höchsten Punkt Helsinkis gegangen. 7000 cm! In diesem Sinne: Berg heil und bis in ein paar Wochen!

Right now I’m in the plane and it’s over. But first about the last few days:

We went swimming in the sea. It was such a nice day and the water was a little bit cold. Then, I spent two days filming a music project and it took me way too long. On my last weekend we went to the summer cottage. Elina and I went to the smoke sauna, drank Sima and made pancakes. The cottage is in the middle of the forest, it was so calm and beautiful!

On Sunday, it was my host mum’s birthday, so we celebrated that.

Then it was my last week and I went on a hunt for the last souvenirs.

On Wednesday we went to an adventure park with all the exchange students and hosts and it was a lot of fun!

Thursday/yesterday was my birthday and my last day. In the morning I celebrated with my host family, it was so nice!

Later, we went to school one last time to get the certificate and then to Linnanmäki! Linnanmäki is an amusement park and we spent the whole afternoon until it closed there. It was so much fun!

It was terrible needing to say goodbye to my family today, not knowing when or if I‘ll ever see them again.

Also my handluggage was overweight and it costed a lot… and as if it wasn‘t already enough they accidentally ripped my certificate when they checked my backpack.

But it was amazing seeing my family and friends again at home!

I can say my exchange was a huge success and I learned so much! In the predeparture training they told us about everyone having a low one day but for me it never happened. There was always something to look forward to and to be excited about. I loved it so much!

Week 7 and 8 in Barcelona (and Naples)

Weitere 2 Wochen sind vergangen und ich habe wieder so viel erlebt, dass es unglaublich ist, dass all diese Erlebnisse in 2 Wochen passiert sind. Hier erzähle ich nur von den Hightlights der Highlights. Ich beginne mit der Fazer Experience, das ist eine Führung durch die berühmte Fazer Fabrik. Am Ende hatten wir 15 Minuten Zeit für eine Verkostung. Es war köstlich und hat mich überzeugt im Shop viel zu kaufen. Außerdem habe ich mit meiner Gastfamilie einen Ausflug in die Stadt Tampere gemacht. Dort haben wir den ganzen Tag verbracht und dann am Abend das Eishockey Spiel von Österreich und den USA angeschaut. In der Arena war eine tolle Atmosphäre (obwohl Österreich verloren hat). Am Wochenende danach waren meine Eltern und meine Schwester in Helsinki zu besuch. Es hat viel Spaß gemacht ihnen die Stadt zu zeigen. Außerdem haben wir einen ganzen Tag in Tallin verbracht und die Insel Suomenlinna besichtigt. Meine Schwester und ich waren das 1. Mal in unserem Leben auf einer richtigen Achterbahn, als wir mit der bekannten Holzachterbahn in Linnanmäki gefahren sind. Meine Eltern und ich sind am gleichen Tag geflogen. Ja ihr habt richtig gehört, denn am Heimreisetag meiner Familie habe ich einen Rundflug über Helsinki gemacht. Es war unglaublich. Das Wetter war grandios und es war toll die vielen Inseln, Seen und Sehenswürdigkeiten von Oben zu sehen.

Wie immer sind hier ein Paar Ausschnitte aus meinem Tagebuch:

Milch zum Mittagessen!

Irgendwann will ich auch ein Haus an einem See in Finnland haben.

Ich hab den 4€ Kaffee gesehen und dachte mir: Gar nicht so teuer.

Als ich mit meiner Familie durch die Stadt gegangen bin und sie auf einmal nicht mehr hinter mir waren, habe ich gemerkt, dass ich mich an die finnische Gehgeschwindigkeit angepasst habe.

Nun geht mein Austausch in Helsinki auch schon dem Ende zu. Ich habe so viel erlebt, gelernt und gesehen und ich werde mein Leben hier vermissen. Meine letzten 2 Wochen habe ich gut genutzt. Zusammen mit allen anderen Austauschschülern habe ich einen Tag im Freizeitpark Linnanmäki verbracht. Wir hatten ein Tagesticket und damit konnten wir mit so vielen Attraktionen fahren, wie wir wollten. Mein eindeutiger Favorit war die alte Holzachterbahn, mit der wir mehrmals gefahren sind. Ich war bei der letzten Fahrt des Tages in der 1. Reihe des Wagons. Da ist die Sonne schon untergegangen und wir hatten eine wundervolle Aussicht auf die Stadt und den Freizeitpark. Den nächsten Tag habe ich mit meiner Gastfamilie in Porvoo verbracht. Das ist eine total nette Stadt in der es viele nette Shops gibt, in denen ich Stunden verbringen könnte. Außerdem hat letzte Woche die Schule in Finnland geendet und das haben wir zusammen mit den Finnen gefeiert. Es gab eine Abschlusszeremonie für die Absolventen, bei der sie ihre Kappen bekommen-das war sehr festlich. In den Ferien war ich mit meiner Gastfamilie für 3 Nächte bei ihrem Sommer Cottage, das an einem See liegt. Es war wunderschön. Ich liebe es, dass es nie ganz dunkel wird und der Sonnenuntergang fast 2 Stunden dauert. Wir waren oft in der Sauna und sind im 13 Grad kalten See geschwommen. Außerdem waren wir rudern, haben gegrillt und ohne Feuerzeug Feuer gemacht. Am letzten Tag sind wir in die Stadt Mikkeli gefahren, was echt Spaß gemacht hat.

Irgendwann werde ich mir ein Sommerhaus an einem See in Finnland kaufen.

One day I want describe closer is Friday, the 9th of February, so carnival. After weeks of creating a dance, being unhappy with it, creating a new one with a completely different theme and practicing it, we finally perfected the dance on Thursday. We bought our costumes, a cheerleader outfit consisting of a blue tutu, a white tank top and of course, pom pomps.
Friday morning we did our hair and makeup at school before practicing the dance a few last times. There’s a big dance competition at school, where every class creates a dance to a different topic. All the 1st and 2nd grades compete against each other, all the 3rd and 4th and so on. Here, we are in 4th grade, 4d to be specific, so we got to watch most of our competition before our turn. We were told that our dance was one of the best, so we had high hopes for a win. Our topic was “descendants”, specifically the scene were the prince sings a song for the villain’s daughter after they won a football game, which is why were dressed as cheerleaders and football players. Dancing on the stage in front of the whole school was one of the best experiences here yet. It went by in no time, and everything went as planned. We had to wait until all the other classes finished until the announced the winners. And – we actually won!!! I couldn’t believe it at first, but we all ran to the stage and celebrated on it. It was such a wonderful moment!

My exchange in Finland

My first two weeks

Before I went to Finland, I didn’t know at all what to expect. When my exchange student was at my place we had some difficulties, so I was a bit scared about my stay at first. Even when we arrived in Helsinki, I didn’t realize this would be my home for the next 5 weeks. In my first week in Helsinki we had holidays, so we tried to use this week as good as possible. My host student Aarni showed me around Latokartano, the place where he lives and we made a tour through the centre of Helsinki. Together with my friend Pia and her host student Milja we visited Soumenlinna which is an island in front of Helsinki. On the weekend of the first week we visited Tallinn and even though the weather wasn’t great, we could see what a lovely city Tallinn is. My personal highlight in Tallinn was a little shop which sold all kinds of chocolate, cookies and cinnamon rolls - a must see for everyone visiting Tallinn.

The second week in Helsinki wasn’t as eventful as the first one but Pia and I got to know the school and the Finnish school system which is quite different to the Austrian one. It has probably more similarities to an American high school because the students are visiting the classrooms, and every teacher has their own classroom. There is also barely a class community but more groups of people with the same interests. The lessons are usually 75 minutes long and the school lasts until the afternoon. Because of that there is a lunch break where you can get free food from the cafeteria. The food was usually okay but at least healthy and the best part about it was the freshly baked bread you could get.

Ruka

The highlight of my exchange was our trip to Ruka, a town in the north of Finland which is famous for its skiing resorts. As an Austrian and a skiing-lover I was very excited about skiing in a foreign country. The skiing in Finland is definitely different than the skiing in Austria. The biggest difference are the “mountains” because Finland is a flat country and so are the skiing areas. Ruka for example had the highest point at 492m. which sounds almost funny to an Austrian. However, the snow for example was better than I ever experienced it at home and because of the cold temperatures the slopes were in great conditions until the evening. They also have longer opening hours ( 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.) and sometimes they are even open until 11 p.m. I personally loved this aspect and tried to ski as long as possible. And skiing at night or while the sun sets is a great experience. :) But also aside from skiing Ruka was beautiful. There was at least 1m of snow everywhere and you couldn’t even walk off the track. On our last day I went to the forest and the snow-covered trees were magical.

My last two weeks

After our trip to Ruka I had only two weeks left in Finland, and I couldn’t believe my exchange was almost over. In these two weeks I tried to spend a lot of time with Pia because when I will go home Pia would stay in Finland for another two months and I would see her in May again. So, after school we would spend most of our time in the centre of Helsinki looking for nice thrift stores, eating cinnamon rolls or just walking around. On the weekend I went with Aarni, his mother and her best friend to Heureka, the science centre of Helsinki. It has a lot of cool exhibitions about the present and the past and also many things you can try out by yourself. For example, there was a machine which simulated a walk on the moon!
And as fast as the trip started it was already over. Before I could realize it, I was packing my suitcase and I was on my way home. Although I would miss Helsinki and the chill life I had there, I was looking forward to see all the people at home again and tell them about my experiences.
