A forceful campaign was essential to the President and his advisers. Their aggressive tactics included illegal espionage. Richard Nixon feverishly attempted to cover up the crimes committed. In August of the break ins, Nixon gave a speech in which he swore his white house staff had no involvement in the crimes. Most voters believed him, and in November he was reelected President.

Discovering that the wiretaps failed, June 7th, a group of 5 men returned to the Watergate building. A security guard noticed the odd security footage, and called the police, who arrested them on site. It was not immediately clear the burglars were connected to the president, however suspicions were raised when police found copies of the re-election committee's phone number in the burglars belongings.

Not much later after the victorious reelection, Nixon's cover up started to fall apart. It was discovered that a few days after the break-ins he provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to the burglars as "hush money". Then, Nixon and his aids instructed the CIA to interfere with the FBI's investigation of the crimes. Information also came to light that Nixon had taped every conversation to happen in the oval office, which he refused to give up until the Supreme Court had ordered him to.

Nixon's efforts to cover up were more serious than the crimes originally committed. The House of Representatives voted to impeach Nixon, as not only was he abusing presidential power, but it was a deliberate obstruction of justice, and violated the constitution on many accounts.

Nixon's abuse of his presidential power had a long-lasting effect on American society and its political life. It created an atmosphere of cynicism and distrust, where Americans questioned their leaders and had to think more critically. It also added further disappointment to a national climate already hurt by the difficulties and losses they faced in the previous and current years.
