Buck did not cry out. He did not check himself, but drove in upon Spitz, shoulder to shoulder, so hard that he missed the throat. They rolled over and over in the powdery snow. Spitz gained his feet almost as though he had not been overthrown, slashing Buck down the shoulder and leaping clear. Twice his teeth clipped together, like the steel jaws of a trap, as he backed away for better footing, with lean and lifting lips that writhed and snarled. —The Call of the Wild,Jack London by Melissa Macleod

What the conflict shows about Buck and Spitz is that they have anticipated this fight, with each of them being consumed with the hate of the other. Buck's hate for spits and his ambition lead to him riling the dogs into a revolt, to take away the fear factor of Spitz. For example: "Buck did not cry out. He did not check himself, but drove in upon Spitz". This shows that buck was ready, almost anticipating the blood that would finally be shed, the battle long overdue. Finally, this shows that Buck is crafty, because he organized a whole revolt, and in the end he beats Spitz, who had been in multiple dogfights. So, to put in similar terms, Buck- 1. Spits? 0.
