         <description><![CDATA[<div>645000 Africans were imported to America to fulfill labor and lack of workers.&nbsp; With slavery also came controversy, British colony of Georgia banned slavery from 1735 to 1750, still legal in 12 other colonies.&nbsp; After the American revolution northern states started to pass the emancipation laws,&nbsp; as the North was against slavery and the South was not this created a divide.&nbsp; South depended on slavery in their economy, they believed without slavery would change their way of life. By 1820 slavery was illegal in all Northern states.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was the aftermath of acquiring new land, which then brought up the debate of slavery.  The Missouri Compromise was Congress turning Maine into a free state and Missouri into a slave state.  Also marking any state above  the 30 36 line a slave state.  The Missouri Compromise also tried to make  slave and free states equals, but it backfired creating tensions between the North and the South. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Kansas Nebraska act of 1854 was drafted by Stephen A. Douglas, which allowed settlers from Kansas and Nebraska on if slavery would be allowed within new state borders.&nbsp; This act repealed the Missouri compromise and mandated popular sovereignty.&nbsp; This act also led to "Bleeding Kansas" which was an uprising of pro-slavery and people against slavery to go into territories to sway a vote.&nbsp; This caused tensions because this issue would be decided by popular sovereignty, southerners hoped slavery would be allowed and Northerners were angry that the Missouri Compromise had been abolished.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Dred Scott vs. Sanford 1858</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Dred Scott v. Stanford controversy from 1846-1857 occurred when The owner of Dred Scott's  died while they were in a free state, Dred Scott argued that since he was in a free state when his owner died, he should be considered a free black. The Supreme Court denied his freedom and ruled that no black could have U.S citizenship or petition a court. This ruling by the Supreme Court deemed the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional which created debates and tension between the North and the South.</div>]]></description>

         <title>1861 Shots Fired At Fort Sumter = Civil War Starts</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Battle of Fort Sumter marked the beginning of the Civil War. Since South Carolina seceded from  Union, Fort Sumter became an outpost in foreign land. Abraham Lincoln announced he was going to send supplies to the garrisons since they were  in a tough situation. Confederates took this announcement and bombarded the Fort for  exchange of fire for 34 hours. The garrison gave up and  Confederates defended the Fort for a time by defending against Union forces. This attack on Fort Sumter marked  beginning of the Civil War.</div>]]></description>
