Rationale: we chose this lesson because it allows students to collaborate, read, and express new ideas through creativity  

Materials/Procedures Building a House:

Objective- Students will be able to read a story and apply the knowledge from the story to engineer their own house. They will use a variety of materials to make the sturdiest house.  

Materials- Book, Paper, Blocks, Popsicle Sticks, Straws, Fan, Hair Dryer, Worksheet 

Steps:   

Assessment: Worksheet where students can write their predictions down, draw their house, and write their conclusion. 

 

Standard for Fractured Tale: CC.1.4.2.M - Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events (English Language Arts – Writing) 

Rationale -   we chose this because it gives the students the chance to be creative and write anything they want about anything they want. Kids seem to be more  excited to do things when they have the freedom to create what they want. 

Objective -  students will be able to write their own fractured fairytale. 

Materials - activity worksheet and a book 

Steps: 

1.  reread the story 

2.  complete the worksheet down below 

3. make a rough draft of your own story 
4. have teacher review what you wrote 
5. make any necessary changes and complete your final draft 
6. share with the class!

Assessment:  Students will complete the worksheets about what they chose to write about. There is also other worksheets they can do about the three little pigs to get them started.

In this project I contributed in a variety of ways. The first way that I contributed to this project was I helped develop the ideas for each of our lesson activities. I also found the worksheets for our second lesson plan. These worksheets help students by giving them a basis for writing their own fractured fairy tale. The first worksheet allows them to organize their thoughts and map their story. The second worksheet allows them to have a space to convert their map into a fractured fairy tale. The third worksheet is a part of our adaptations that allows students who are struggling with this lesson, it gives them some guided support in writing their story. Another way that I contributed to the project was finding the “Book Read Aloud”. I think that this is a great resource for parents to use in order to have a better understanding on what their student is learning. The parents will have a better understanding of what the activities are and why we chose these activities with the help of listening to the story themselves. Finally, I developed the adaptions for our second lesson. These adaptations support students with special needs who may be in the classroom. This allows for the least restrictive environment for all children in the classroom.

 

Overall, I feel like this project has taught me a lot not only about integrating play into the classroom but also other resources that I would be able to use in my future classroom. I learned previously in the STREAM project different creative ideas that incorporate play into lesson plans. This was useful in when designing our own lesson plan based on our book. I was able to use a lot of prior knowledge I learned about children learning how to write when helping with project. I learned how to work with my teammates and use the learning standards when making a lesson plan. I learned how to modify my lessons in order to suit the needs of all students in my classroom. Lastly, I was able to learn new creative ways incorporate play in my classroom. I will take this knowledge with me in the rest of my school career as well as my professional career. 

Within this project I contributed to a variety of ways. I assisted in finding and grasping the correct steps, assessments, materials and rationale for each lesson activity we chose. The lesson idea we chose was a fun, creative and interactive way to engage students in creating story lines and having the opportunity to share with their peers.  

Overall, this project has taught me a lot about the fundamentals of integrating play in children's learning development and incorporating it into the classroom. In combination with our prior STREAM project, this class overall was very resourceful and fun as I learned and gained so much more knowledge in the crucial elements and concepts that tie into early childhood learning development. I also learned how to include adaptations for all students and the importance of incorporating them into each lesson and or activity.
