Description:
The colors of our climate quilt show Earth’s warming: blue means cooler times and red means warmer times. There is more red because recent years have been warmer. Each student stitched their name to show that everyone has a role in protecting the climate. The quilt is made from reused fabrics to highlight recycling and caring for the environment.

Description: Each student plotted the temperature changes of their home area on a small chart. These are the small villages of Elva Parish and Annikoru, where our Konguta School is located.

Materials used: Old t-shirts and other jersey materials, cut into stripes and knit with 10 mm plastic knitting needles

Description: The project on climate patterns spoke to us immediately as our school’s folk dancing groups’ striped skirts are just in those colours: dark blue, light pink, dark pink, white and a little bit of green. Maybe our ancestors also noticed that years aren’t brothers – sometimes colder than expected, sometimes warmer, and they knitted that knowledge into the striped fabric.

Our climate carpet contains information of around fifty years. Keila’s climate trend is on the rise: compared to 1979, the 2025 year’s mean temperature is almost 3 degrees warmer. The various warmer and colder years are knitted into our carpet with different blues and reds. The carpets made by the teachers during breaks and 8th grade girls in home economics class are a good way to explain climate change to students. The seat covers made by the Eco-School team, which will be ready by summer, will be very useful in outdoor lessons and which we will probably be making many more of as it is a good way to give old t-shirts a new life.

As we know, trees also save information about climate in their year rings. In 2025 a storm fell many fir trees in the forest behind our school, and  we now have the opportunity to put our climate carpets side-by-side with disks sawed from a big old fir tree and compare the climate stripes on both the tree disk and the climate carpet. The fir tree itself grew here long before the current school building, named Põhjamaja, was built on this spot 15 years ago. The tree has seen many people and different weathers and will nicely complement our climate carpets and chair seats.

Materials used: Plastic bread bags and black yarn

Author: Grade 7-9 class

Description: The rug was woven on a loom from small strips of plastic bags. The students first cut bread bags into thin strips. Then they tied the strips together to make longer pieces and rolled them into plastic balls, similar to yarn balls. These were later used on the loom to create the rug.

What makes it special is that the rug is made almost completely from plastic, so it is waterproof. The whole process develops the students’ hand skills and their practical abilities.

The rug represents a 50-year climate scale in Lääne-Virumaa. Darker colors show colder periods, while red and other warm tones show warmer periods.

Descriptoin: A crocheted rug that shows climate change trends. Starting with blue, the changes begin to appear in different colors. The rug is very bright and cheerful, but its meaning is quite sad.

Our small planet is changing every year, and our generation is witnessing this change.

Author: 5th and 6th grade students of Tartu Hansa School.

Description: Mini rugs were woven by 5th and 6th grade students during natural science lessons. For making the larger rug, we used frames available at the school. The large rug contains stripes from January to June, spanning the years 1979 to 2025.

Process: In a 7th grade geography class, we recorded climate data, and in handicraft class we applied warp threads onto a knitting frame. The work was completed over two weeks through collaboration between students from different classes. The December climate pattern turned out to be the most colorful.

If in other months earlier years tend to show colder temperatures and later years warmer ones, then in December larger contrasts appear between the years.

We shaped the knitted piece into a pencil holder.

Author: Grade 5-9 class

Description: Upper secondary students studied the average air temperature in Paldiski over the past 30 years. Based on the results, a color model was created. According to each year’s average temperature, students in grades 5–9 wove fabric strips into a rug during handicraft lessons. A wooden frame was used to make the rug, and the textile material was obtained from a textile farm that recycles used clothing.

Materials used: old leftover textiles were cut into fabric stripes which then were crocheted using fingers.

Authors: it is a group work: the 8th graders sorted the fabric, the 6th graders cut the fabric stripes and the 7th graders chrocheted and put together the mobile.
