Tet, also known as Lunar new year festival, is the biggest traditional festival in Viet Nam. Tet is usually from the end of January to early February. Before Tet, Vietnamese prepare many things for the three main days. They clean their house and decorate with flowers such as kumquat tree or peach blossom. A huge amount of food will be bought before Tet for making traditional dishes. Banh Chung, Banh Tet, Gio cha, Xoi and Mut, …and candies are the foods that must have on Tet holidays. During Tet, people visit their relatives’ homes and give wishes. However, the Vietnamese believe that the first visitor a family receives in the year determines their fortune for the entire year, people never enter any house on the first day without being invited first. Another custom is giving lucky money, which is put into a red envelope as a symbol of luck and wish for a new age. Traditionally, elders will give lucky money to children and the oldest people in the family. However, nowadays, people can give it to anyone including friends, parents, neighbors,… Besides, Vietnamese usually go to pagodas or temples to pray for health, wealth, success,… To Vietnamese, Tet is the happiest time of all year around, members in a family can gather together, which is a meaningful messages of Lunar New year festival. All in all, Tet is all about back to origins, be good to others, enjoy the precious moment, and wish for the best to come.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is an important traditional holiday in my country. Mid-Autumn festival is celebrated not only in Vietnam but also in some other parts of Asia as well, such as China, Japan or Korea. And it is often celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar with full moon at night. In the past, on this day the moon was brightest and roundest which represented the family reunion or gatherings. Therefore, families and friends often came together or harvested crops for the festival. Nowadays, Mid Autumn Festival is mainly for young children in Vietnam to enjoy the best time of the year. But not only can children celebrate this day but also adults can, adults who wish to have a chance to remind their their childhood and feel young again.

Christmas is a celebration of Jesus Christ's birth. Some people celebrate Christmas differently, but it is all based upon the birth of Christ. Christmas is on December 25th. This is the day that Jesus is said to be born. Nobody really knows the exact date Jesus was born. Yet, in 137 AD, the Bishop of Rome ordered the birthday of The Christ child be celebrated as a solemn feast. In 350 AD, another Roman Bishop named Julius I, choose December 25th as the observance day of Christmas. People celebrate Christmas differently form one another. For example, my family celebrates Christmas by decorating our entire house. We also exchange gifts, go to church, and cook a big dinner. Even though we do all these things, we remember the "true" meaning of Christmas - To Celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ.

No one knows where the specific origin of the custom of wishing Tet began. However, Tet is the time when we welcome a new year and say goodbye to the old year, also known as the moment of change of seasons. A new year with many new beginnings, everyone has their own dreams and ambitions. We all hope all good things will come in the next year.

That's why the custom of wishing Tet on the first days of the year was formed. They give each other good New Year wishes to hope that their friends and relatives will also achieve their own wishes. This is a beautiful tradition of Vietnamese people on Tet holidays and has been handed down for thousands of generations. Generation after generation and so on they exchanged the best wishes.

Traditionally, the Lunar New Year is for people to pay respects to gods such as Earth god, Rain god, Thunder god, Water god, Sun god, ... and pray for a year of favorable rain and wind, a bountiful autumn. Besides, this is also considered a "refreshing" day, a day where people can hope for a peaceful, prosperous and favorable new year for the whole year and put aside all bad luck in the old year. Therefore, on Tet holiday, every house is busy cleaning, shopping, and decorating the house beautifully. This is also an opportunity for people to renew emotionally and spiritually so that the relationship with their loved ones is closer, the spirit is more comfortable and joyful. During the Tet holiday, families often gather to wish each other Tet, light incense together in memory of their grandparents and ancestors, and thank them for their blessing over the past year.

King Hung Temple Festival is a traditional festival that is considered the national festival in Vietnam. The festival commemorates the merit of the first King of Vietnam - Hung Kings. It's an occasion for every Vietnamese to remember their origin and express their respect as well as gratitude to the ancestors of Vietnamese people. It is from 8th to 11th of the third lunar month in Phu Tho Province. This festival is impressive because there are many people joining it. The main activities are: offering to Hung Kings, bamboo swings, Lion dances, wrestling and xoan singing performances. I like this festival very much because it is so meaningful and I also like its joyfulness. Joining the pilgrimage to the ancestral land of King Hung Temple these days has become a beautiful tradition of Vietnamese people.
