Carburn Park is just one of many parks in the Calgary area. It has water, both still and running bodies, and lots and lots of trees and grassy meadows teeming with life. Green spaces and public parks, as both wild rural places and protected urban spaces, are critical elements of what creates healthy individuals and thus, healthy communities.

Why did you take a picture of this?

As a child, I grew up on the west coast of Vancouver Island, where the mighty old growth evergreen forests met the bounty of the Pacific Ocean. That powerful landscape became a part of my soul, and to this day, large bodies of water and big, wide trees make me feel “at home” no matter where I am. I felt this picture could be an invitation for students to investigate why green spaces and wild places are important to us, and explore how identity is connected to land.

What does this picture tell us about your understanding or beliefs about citizenship/identity today?

I believe everyone has a connection to the land in some form, and that this connection is an important part of our individual and collective identity. I also believe that, depending on your experience and teachings about the land you grew up on, your perspectives about its value and meaning can drastically differ. The front matter of the Program of Studies states that we are to support students to “…demonstrate a consciousness for the limits of the natural environment, stewardship for the land, and an understanding of the principles of sustainability.” (Alberta Education, 2005: Program Rationale and Philosophy, Social Studies K-12, p. 2.). In a country where land is deeply tied to identity – for both Indigenous peoples and Settler communities - and which relies heavily on its natural resources for economic growth and development, Canadians have a legal and ethical responsibility to understand, protect and steward the land for today and for future generations.

How can this picture provide opportunities for us to expand our notion of what citizenship/identity is now?

I think this picture can open up all sorts of interesting and important questions with students about how the land impacts us as people: Why are green spaces and wild places important to us? How does the land contribute to our sense of identity? How do various communities view and use the land, and what does it say about each of us? What can we learn from each other? How can we respect it and protect it – and why should we? What have we learned from our past relationship with the land that can help us create a strong, positive, healthy future? And how is all of this a part of being Canadian?

Your photo and words show just how connected identity and citizenship are. Much of Canadian identity comes from the land but through citizenship we respect it and become stewards. This makes me wonder whether there are any situations where they can exist separately.

I really liked this picture as it exemplifies a deep understanding of citizenship and how we are all interwoven through this vast Canadian landscape through our identity, histories, culture, beliefs, etc. I think this is an important picture, and can demonstrate that we are all apart of the same picture. I also agree, that we struggle with the concept of diversity, but I think it is a journey that we embark on, and not a fixed outcome. Great photo!
