Principals need to understand this is the equivalent to a language STAAR and respect the testing times and not schedule events and/or fire drills during this time.

Hall monitors are needed! For elementary, specials and/or recess schedules need to be adjusted so EB students aren't missing these.

The guidance in the manual is vague on how far apart students should be seated and how many students should be tested at a time. When you test Beginner and Intermediates, their scores can be effected by their reluctance to speak in front of others. Some environments are not conducive to best results.....student comfort and score integrity are more important than "getting it done" in a set time frame.

Secondary principals need help understanding that ELFs must be out of their ESL and inclusion classes the entire time for TELPAS tutorials and testing. Also, this cannot be accomplished in a couple of weeks, if we are going to do the tutorials with integrity. The more time we spend preparing the students on HOW to take the tests, the better they will do. With the numbers we have, we are looking at 3-4 full weeks out of classes during TELPAS. It's best practice for the ELFs to conduct the tutorials and test the students, not other staff members.

Subs for Secondary ELFs

Secondary principals are concerned that we are out of our ESL and inclusion classes for too many days and have asked that ESL pay for subs for us.

I meet with my students and show them their scores from last year and we talk about how they are scored on TELPAS.

Letter to Parents

In previous years, I created a form letter to mail to parents explaining the purpose and importance of TELPAS. I set it up as a merge document and included the dates/times the students would be attending their tutorial and both of their tests, so that parents would be aware of those dates/times. Now that I'm split on two campuses, I will not have time to do this.

Last year, we spent 90 minutes going over the tutorial with students. That amount of time was needed in order to properly prepare the students for the test, give them tips for how to answer the questions, and allow them time to practice.
