Dela Rosa, however, questioned the rebels’ “seriousness” about its offer to cooperate with the government in fighting terrorist groups and said that the NPA “exploited” the situation in Marawi City when they carried out the Sunday’s attack.

“I don’t know if they are really serious. Because if they were, they should have not done something like that,” dela Rosa said Monday at the commemoration of the 156th birth anniversary of national hero Jose Rizal, here.

Negotiators from the government and the National Democratic Front agreed to halt offensives in light of the ongoing fight against the Maute Group in Mindanao.

Duterte, 72, has not been seen in public since Sunday and missed a scheduled appearance the following day at annual Independence Day celebrations in Manila, sparking speculation about the state of his health.

“He’s just taking some time off to rejuvenate,” presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella told reporters. Abella said there was no date for when Duterte would resume his official duties, although he insisted the president was healthy.

Abella announced on Wednesday, during a Palace briefing, that Education Secretary Leonor Briones will be moving the opening of classes, which was initially set for June 5, to a later date.

In a media release, the Department of Education said, “classes in Marawi City is postponed—for two weeks at the most.” Briones said it is for the safety of the people and “not because the schools will be used as evacuation centers.”

“The opening of classes in eight districts from Lanao del Sur, those nearest to the armed conflict, will also be postponed to further ensure the safety of learners and DepEd employees,” DepEd added
