It was very powerful to see how much learning objectives impact student success and I am very impressed with how much information the teachers in the story share with students up front. It really makes you reflect on your simple "I can" statements. Lately it just feels like regurgitating the standard but this is so much more than that. I also like how they integrate social goals into this process.

In order to have intentional learning teachers must have teacher clarity and teacher clarity comes from assessment. This book talks about assessing so frequently that you have a 20 minute slot each day scheduled just for this. We have really increased our amount of assessments and it has really impacted teaching and learning negatively this year. I wonder where the disconnect is here??

When we were unpacking and making our KFOs we were under the impression we needed to use as much of the vocabulary as we can from the standard. But often in this book and in the video it discusses using terminology that is easy for the children to understand and not using this vocabulary directly. Just made me question some of our unpacking documents and assessments. For example, having to say initial, medial, final for sounds in cvc words when clearly beginning, middle, and end are more kid friendly. Just wondering if we miss out on the understanding in our attempt to use vocabulary they aren't quite ready for?
