Following the Civil War, the United States undergoes a period of Reconstruction aimed at rebuilding the nation and integrating newly freed slaves into society. This era sees the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution, abolishing slavery, granting citizenship and equal protection under the law to all citizens, and ensuring voting rights regardless of race. The Reconstruction Era laid the foundation for the Industrial Revolution by providing a framework for economic and social change. The abolition of slavery and the expansion of citizenship rights during Reconstruction created a larger workforce and consumer base. This, combined with technological advancements and a growing infrastructure, fueled the rapid industrialization that characterized the late 19th century.

https://www.britannica.com/event/Reconstruction-United-States-history#/media/1/493722/145439

Responding to the social and economic challenges of industrialization, a reform movement known as Progressivism emerges. Progressives advocate for government intervention to address issues such as corruption, monopolies, labor rights, women's suffrage, and public health. This era sees the implementation of various reforms, including the establishment of regulatory agencies and the passage of constitutional amendments such as Prohibition (18th Amendment) and women's suffrage (19th Amendment). The Progressive Era's emphasis on reform and interventionism extended beyond domestic affairs to international relations. Progressive leaders advocated for a more active role for the United States in world affairs, promoting diplomacy and involvement in global conflicts to advance democracy and human rights. This mindset contributed to the U.S. decision to enter World War I in 1917.

Secondary Source:

https://www.americanyawp.com/text/20-the-progressive-era/

https://www.americanyawp.com/text/wp-content/uploads/LoC-01990u-WJB-Shall-the-People-Rule1.jpg

The outbreak of World War I in Europe draws the United States into the conflict in 1917. The war marks the emergence of the United States as a global superpower and has profound effects on American society and economy. It also leads to shifts in international relations and sets the stage for later conflicts, including World War II.World War I had far-reaching economic consequences, both during and after the conflict. The war stimulated American industry and agriculture, leading to a period of prosperity known as the Roaring Twenties. However, the post-war economic boom was unsustainable, and the stock market crash of 1929 triggered the Great Depression. The war debt, combined with overproduction and financial speculation, exacerbated the economic downturn and led to widespread unemployment and hardship.

Secondary Source:

https://www.americanyawp.com/text/21-world-war-i/

https://www.americanyawp.com/text/wp-content/uploads/Untitled-41.jpg
