In 2008 the Islamic Taliban movement took control of the valley, girls could no longer go to school. She campaigned on behalf of girls and their right to learn. In 2012, on her way home from school, a masked gunman shot her on the left side of her head. After months of surgeries and rehabilitation, she took the decision to continue her fight for girls.

She received the Nobel Peace Prize in December 2014 and became the youngest-ever Nobel laureate.
