This past year has showed many people that mental health is as important as physical health. We've realized that everyone, no matter the age or region, is vulnerable to mental health problems. This concept map will illustrate how mental health is a global burden of disease that's further expanding due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I explain that mental health issues are severe and that it's important to develop strategies to help lower these issues so everyones mental and physical health can improve.

Depression is one of the mental illnesses that impact people worldwide regardless of age. It's also a mental illness that affects mental health as well as physical health. This article explained that those diagnosed with depressions have a 20-fold greater mortality risk than those without depression. The authors also explained that depression affects the quality of life of the subject since they're more at risk for cardiovascular disease and ultimately death and also more likely to have a lower income due to lower productivity.

As many people have been discussing, this past year had a lot of impacts on our social, mental, and physical well-being. Having to quarantine for months and engage in online activities rather than in-person affected many people, who had never felt mental illnesses, and led them to start developing anxiety and/or depression symptoms. The image shows how the percentage of people with symptoms of mental illnesses increased dramatically with covid. Since the pandemic will continue, it's important to address those issues so they won't worsen.

When the discussions about the emergence of COVID-19 began, many people began to worry and experience symptoms that were worsening their mental health. This article was written 3 months after the pandemic began and it shows how Hong Kong patients began worrying about the uncertainties of the pandemic thus led them to experience anxiety and depression. It highlights how the risks of the pandemic aren't just contracting covid but also developing mental health conditions.

The image above shows the share of populations with mental health disorders. As the color increases depth, from yellow to red, it means that the percentage of mental health disorders is higher. I think this image highlights how many developed countries have higher percentage of mental health disorders even though they supposedly have better healthcare systems. Ultimately it shows that regardless of wealthiness, all countries share mental health disorders since unfortunately mental health isn't a priority.

Mental illnesses have and continue to impact the global burden of diseases. Although there has been an increase in research, resources, and awareness towards mental health many countries continue to have a large percentage of patients with mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. The emergence of stressful situations, like COVID-19, will further expand this burden of disease. It's important to understand the severity of mental illnesses so there can be detailed plans and/or policies that can help combat them.
